Lancia Delta
Powerful Fiat 2.0 MultiJet 16V with common rail direct injection and turbocharger. High torque, but suffers from typical large-diesel problems: DPF blockage with short-trip use, EGR coking and turbo damage from heat stress.

2.0 MultiJet with 360 Nm — powerful drive that makes the Delta effortless on the motorway.
Engine Weaknesses 4
The turbocharger of the 2.0 MultiJet is exposed to sustained high temperatures due to the close exhaust routing. Turbo damage has occurred after just a few tens of thousands of kilometres, identifiable by whistling and power loss.
Symptoms: Whistling or howling under load changes, power loss at higher revs, blue exhaust clouds.
Premature water pump failures have been documented on several Delta 844 examples with the 2.0 MultiJet. The repair requires extensive disassembly. At the same time, plastic intake tract components can become brittle.
Symptoms: Rising coolant temperature, coolant loss without visible leakage, squealing noise from the engine bay, overheating warning.
The diesel particulate filter cannot regenerate itself when predominantly used in city or short-trip conditions. Soot accumulation leads to increased fuel consumption, power reduction and limp mode.
Symptoms: DPF warning light, noticeably increased fuel consumption, power loss especially from mid-range revs, limp mode when fully blocked.
The EGR valve tends to accumulate soot deposits that block its travel. The result is irregular mixture formation, power dips at low revs and occasional limp mode activation.
Symptoms: Judder and power loss at low revs, engine warning light, occasional limp mode, increased soot emission on cold start.
Vehicle Weaknesses 9
The M32 gearbox (GM/Opel) is known for weak bearings on the 6th gear shaft. Howling and whistling from around 80,000 km; gearbox rebuild or bearing replacement required.
Temperature switch or fan control faulty — engine overheats in traffic queues or at low speed. Thermostat can also stick.
The rear brake calipers on the Delta 844 seize from lack of use, as the electric parking brake requires little mechanical actuation of the rear brakes. Pistons corrode inside the caliper.
Isolated reports of front coil spring breakages, especially on vehicles with 18-inch tyres and sports suspension. A broken spring can damage the tyre.
Steering rack develops play — knocking when driving over uneven surfaces and when turning in. Adjustment or replacement of the steering rack required.
Actuator motors for the climate control system (temperature, air distribution or recirculation flaps) fail — climate regulation no longer works correctly.
Sunroof drain hoses block — water runs into the interior and damages electronics under the seats or in the footwell.
Wheel bearings wear prematurely on the Delta 844 compared with similar vehicles. Rear wheel bearings are particularly affected. Seized brake discs complicate removal.
Screws, nuts and panel seams start to rust after around 2 years. Metal connections and sheet metal brackets show corrosion faster than on German competitor models.
