Lancia Delta
Best-selling diesel in the Delta III with a good power-to-consumption ratio. Timing belt every 120,000 km, DPF regeneration problematic with short-trip use.
Solid 1.6 diesel
88 kW 1.6 MultiJet offers good pull for cross-country and motorway — competent and efficient.
Engine Weaknesses 3
The high-pressure injectors on the 2.0 MultiJet 198A2000 can leak and cause rough running. Individual injector replacement around €250; recoding always required.
Symptoms: Hesitation, increased fuel consumption, black exhaust smoke, rough running, difficult warm starts
The DPF on the 2.0 MultiJet clogs during frequent city use and short trips. Regeneration requires motorway driving; without it, soot accumulates until blockage.
Symptoms: Check engine light, power loss, elevated oil level, limp mode
The EGR valve on the 2.0 MultiJet clogs with carbon. Cleaning every 60,000–80,000 km recommended. Engine tuning shops frequently offer EGR delete options.
Symptoms: Hesitation, EGR fault code, rough idle, increased emissions
Vehicle Weaknesses 9
The M32 gearbox (GM/Opel) is known for weak bearings on the 6th gear shaft. Howling and whistling from around 80,000 km; gearbox rebuild or bearing replacement required.
Temperature switch or fan control faulty — engine overheats in traffic queues or at low speed. Thermostat can also stick.
The rear brake calipers on the Delta 844 seize from lack of use, as the electric parking brake requires little mechanical actuation of the rear brakes. Pistons corrode inside the caliper.
Isolated reports of front coil spring breakages, especially on vehicles with 18-inch tyres and sports suspension. A broken spring can damage the tyre.
Steering rack develops play — knocking when driving over uneven surfaces and when turning in. Adjustment or replacement of the steering rack required.
Actuator motors for the climate control system (temperature, air distribution or recirculation flaps) fail — climate regulation no longer works correctly.
Sunroof drain hoses block — water runs into the interior and damages electronics under the seats or in the footwell.
Wheel bearings wear prematurely on the Delta 844 compared with similar vehicles. Rear wheel bearings are particularly affected. Seized brake discs complicate removal.
Screws, nuts and panel seams start to rust after around 2 years. Metal connections and sheet metal brackets show corrosion faster than on German competitor models.
