Kia 1.4 T-GDi

G4LD 1.4L T-GDi (Kappa II) 140 hp Manual Front-wheel drive SUV 2017–2024
– Be Careful
Engine G4LD – Be Careful 1,940–5,400 €

Compact turbocharged four-cylinder with good performance for the compact class. Keep oil changes consistent β€” turbo bearings are sensitive to oil degradation.

Fun Factor? Decent

Turbo urban sprinter in a mini SUV

140 hp 1.4 T-GDi makes the compact Stonic a brisk city car. Surprisingly agile for a small SUV.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! Timing chain skip and elongation

The G4LD 1.4 T-GDi in the Ceed/ProCeed shows known timing chain problems: chain stretch, tensioner skip and in severe cases engine damage. Early CD production years especially affected.

Symptoms: Fault code P0016 (crankshaft/camshaft position implausible), judder during acceleration, loud rattle on start-up

600–1,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Timing chain stretches with frequent short trips

The G4LD 1.4 T-GDi is prone to timing chain elongation like its G4LC relatives, particularly with exceeded oil change intervals (recommended: max. 15,000 km). Over-stretching leads to engine damage.

Symptoms: Rattling from the timing chain area on cold start, engine warning light, camshaft sensor fault, rough running after cold start.

600–2,000 € from 100,000 km
!! Carbon deposits on intake valves

As a direct-injection engine the G4LD shares the fundamental GDi problem of all Kappa turbo engines: carbon deposits on intake valves. In the Ceed PHEV combination with the electric motor, the cleaning interval is particularly important.

Symptoms: Poor throttle response, rough idle, noticeable power reduction under partial load

300–700 € from 60,000 km
! Intake valves carboned up (GDI-typical)

As a direct-injection engine the G4LD does not clean the intake valves with fuel. Soot residues from crankcase ventilation build up on the valves and reduce gas flow.

Symptoms: Rough running in cold operation, power loss at low rpm, increased fuel consumption.

300–700 € from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 4

!! Other Anti-pinch protection absent

The Kia Stonic YB in several trim levels lacks adequate anti-pinch protection on the rear electric window regulators. There is an increased risk of injury to small children.

i Electronics Start-stop system unreliable

The ISG start-stop system on the Stonic YB frequently deactivates permanently when the starter battery is not fully charged. On short-trip drivers, the system is often inactive.

120–250 € from 40,000 km
i Electronics Halogen headlamps with weak light output

Base-spec Stonics are fitted with halogen headlamps that, according to buyers and testers, deliver only mediocre light output and receive MOT advisories for incorrect alignment.

20–150 € from 50,000 km
i Interior High interior noise level on the motorway

According to user reviews, the Stonic YB has a relatively high noise level on the motorway. Wind and road noise intrude annoyingly into the interior, causing fatigue on longer journeys.
