Kia 1.0 T-GDi
Turbocharged three-cylinder direct-injection engine with solid output for its class. Turbo delivers torque early β stick strictly to oil change intervals.
120 hp β adequate for the SUV format
The 120 hp turbo makes the Stonic brisk enough for daily use, but real driving dynamics remain with the Rio.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Cases of premature timing chain failure have been documented on the G3LC 1.0 T-GDi, in individual cases including chain snap and engine damage. Using the wrong engine oil or extended intervals accelerate wear considerably.
Symptoms: Metallic rattle on cold start, loud whistling or whining at higher rpm, sudden engine failure
The small turbo of the 1.0 T-GDi needs adequate cool-down time after sustained high-load use. Switching off the engine immediately after motorway driving can cause the hot turbine shaft to wear without oil cooling.
Symptoms: Turbo noise when transitioning from full load to idle, power drop, in the worst case turbo failure with blue smoke
As a direct-injection engine the intake valves are not cleaned by fuel. At higher mileages soot deposits build up on the intake valves, causing power loss and increased fuel consumption.
Symptoms: Gradual power loss, increased fuel consumption, rough idle at higher mileages.
Cases of intermittent boost pressure drop under full load have been reported on the G3LC 1.0 T-GDi. The turbocharger holds stable to around 0.8 bar; above this, pressure fluctuations can occur. MAP sensor as a possible cause.
Symptoms: Brief power loss during acceleration, engine hesitates under full throttle, irregular acceleration.
Vehicle Weaknesses 4
The Kia Stonic YB in several trim levels lacks adequate anti-pinch protection on the rear electric window regulators. There is an increased risk of injury to small children.
The ISG start-stop system on the Stonic YB frequently deactivates permanently when the starter battery is not fully charged. On short-trip drivers, the system is often inactive.
Base-spec Stonics are fitted with halogen headlamps that, according to buyers and testers, deliver only mediocre light output and receive MOT advisories for incorrect alignment.
According to user reviews, the Stonic YB has a relatively high noise level on the motorway. Wind and road noise intrude annoyingly into the interior, causing fatigue on longer journeys.
