✖ Stay Away!
Engine G4LE ✖ Stay Away! 2,180–8,560 €

Atkinson-cycle engine optimised specifically for hybrid applications. Efficient and reliable in combination with the electric motor — have the high-voltage system inspected by a specialist after any accident.

Fun Factor? Decent

Modern hybrid everyday

141 hp system output in the new Niro — pleasant to drive, clean, efficient. Those seeking emotion are in the wrong place.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! Recall: clutch actuator short circuit and fire risk (PHEV)

Moisture can penetrate the connector of the hydraulic clutch actuator (HCA) and cause a short circuit. Kia recalled 643,307 Niro and Ceed PHEV vehicles worldwide (KBA 14640R/14641R, Nov. 2015–Aug. 2023).

Symptoms: Hybrid warning light, unusual smell from the engine bay, in extreme cases visible smoke or fire

!! 6-speed DCT: judder and clutch wear

The dry DCT in the Niro Hybrid shows judder and grabbing in urban driving. Broken springs in the dual-mass flywheel cause the flywheel to knock against the clutch. Kia replaced affected units under warranty.

Symptoms: Judder on pull-away or slow manoeuvring, rattling or grinding at low rpm, gear feel deteriorates

800–2,500 € from 60,000 km
!! Carbon deposits on intake valves with direct injection

The G4LE 1.6 GDi Hybrid (Atkinson cycle) uses direct injection without port injection. Intake valves can become sooted over time, reducing efficiency and power.

Symptoms: Power loss especially after cold start, rough idle at high mileage.

200–700 € from 80,000 km
! Spark plug fouling in hybrid operation

In hybrid operation the G4LE petrol engine often runs only briefly or not at all. Especially in winter, the spark plugs can develop oily electrodes, leading to misfires and elevated emissions.

Symptoms: Judder on pull-away after extended parking, elevated emissions on cold start, occasional fault code P030x

80–200 € from 40,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Electronics Total infotainment failure — AVN unit faulty

Multiple Niro SG2 owners report a complete infotainment system failure. The cause is either a blown fuse (module 2, 10A) or a faulty AVN unit requiring replacement at approximately €1,857.

300–1,900 € from 50,000 km
!! Electronics Charge port — connector doesn't latch reliably

On some Niro SG2 EV models, the charging plug doesn't latch securely. At HPC fast-charge stations the plug must be inserted with slight pressure. In individual cases the charge port cover or actuator needed replacement.

100–500 € from 30,000 km
! Brakes Rear brake discs rust from EV operation

Niro SG2 drivers who brake primarily using the recuperation paddles rarely use the mechanical rear brakes. The discs then rust heavily, leading to squealing, banging and increased wear.

200–560 € from 40,000 km
! HVAC Heater blows cold air on manual setting

Several SG2 owners report that cold air comes from the vents when the temperature is manually set to 20–21°C. The automatic climate control takes a very long time to deliver warm air, which is particularly annoying in winter.

100–600 € from 30,000 km
! Suspension Front axle creaks at higher mileage

From around 75,000 km, drivers report creaking or clicking from the front axle area. In quiet EV operation, the noise is particularly noticeable. The cause is usually hardened rubber seals on the shock absorbers.

150–500 € from 75,000 km
! Steering Steering notches slightly in centred position

On the Niro SG2, a slight notch in the steering at the neutral position has been reported — multiple forum members confirm the same phenomenon. The issue occurs regardless of LKAS activation.

200–800 € from 30,000 km
i Body Tailgate only opens with key nearby

On the Niro EV SG2, it is reported that the tailgate only opens when the key is directly nearby — even though all other doors are already unlocked. The keyless sensor of the tailgate appears to have a shorter range.

50–300 € from 15,000 km
