Jeep Wrangler · SUV
Most-produced FCA/Stellantis engine — used in Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, RAM, Dodge and 20+ models. Rocker arm/lifter tick is subject of a 2022 class action lawsuit. Plastic oil cooler housing leaks at high mileage — worst case mixes oil and coolant ("chocolate foam"). Dorman metal replacement as permanent fix. Change oil every 5,000 miles and react at the first tick: 200k+ miles realistic.
Pentastar 3.6 JL auto — proven, watch for tick
290 hp V6 in the new JL with more modern electronics. Same Pentastar issues possible, early 2018+ models less documented. Solid choice for JL Wrangler.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Water pump leaks or fails — internal seal failure, corrosion or impeller wear. Multiple repeat failures documented on some vehicles. Use Gates or Mopar branded parts; OEM has a high repeat failure rate.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating, squealing from engine bay
Timing chain tensioner or guide wears — chain can slacken and skip. Possible on Pentastar 3.6 beyond 80k miles. If the chain breaks, piston-to-valve contact causes catastrophic engine damage (interference engine).
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start from engine bay, rough running, fault codes P0016/P0017
Rocker arm needle bearing wears prematurely — roller falls out of its seat, cam lobe gets destroyed. FCA class action lawsuit (2014-2020). "No permanent fix" per lawsuit — dealers replace with identical parts. Go to dealer at the first tick.
Symptoms: Metallic ticking on cold start, misfires, power loss, surging
Oil filter housing gasket leaks — often missed until an oil spot appears on the ground. Cheap repair when caught early.
Symptoms: Oil spot under engine (front), oil smell, dropping oil level
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
Death Wobble documented on JL too — despite revised steering geometry vs JK. Less frequent than the predecessor, but NHTSA complaints on record. Causes identical: tie rods, damper, wheel bearings.
2018-2019 JL: welds on the front track bar bracket not correctly placed — bracket can separate from frame causing loss of steering control. NHTSA Recall 18V-675 (18,055 vehicles). Broader NHTSA investigation into overall weld quality covering approx. 270,000 vehicles. Free repair at dealer.
Welded seams on the floor and sills let water in during rain or washing. JL-specific issue from revised body construction.
A/C loses refrigerant through leaking lines — condenser and line fittings damaged in rough off-road operation.
Start-stop system deactivates unexpectedly or prevents engine start — software fault or AGM battery wear. Known JL issue.
