– Be Careful
Engine GME-T4 – Be Careful 3,900–11,300 $

2.0L turbo with 48V mild hybrid — FCA/Stellantis modern four-cylinder. 270 hp, more economical than the V6 (22-28 mpg). Limited long-term data. Coolant hose fitting leak as early issue. 91 octane recommended. Carbon buildup from direct injection possible at high mileage.

Fun Factor? Decent

2.0T Wrangler JL — efficient turbo, young and less proven

270 hp 2.0L turbo: modern, more efficient than the Pentastar V6. 48V mild hybrid. Limited long-term data — this engine has only been in service since 2018. Direct injection: walnut blasting needed long-term. Start-stop glitches documented.

Engine Weaknesses 3

!! Coolant leak / coolant in oil

Coolant enters the engine bay through failing hose fittings or head gasket — worst case coolant in the oil. Occurs on early GME-T4 models from ~40k miles.

Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible external leak, overheating, milky oil

3,000–7,000 $ from 60,000 km
!! Elevated oil consumption

2.0T turbo shows elevated oil consumption on some vehicles — direct injection without intake port oil wash. 0.5-1 quart per 3k miles in extreme cases.

Symptoms: Dropping oil level, blue smoke under acceleration, positive oil consumption test

0–200 $ from 30,000 km
! Wastegate rattle

Wastegate flap rattles on cold engine or during overrun — typical early-life issue on GME-T4. No immediate engine damage, but a wear indicator.

Symptoms: Rattling/clattering from turbo on cold start or throttle lift

200–800 $ from 40,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 4

!! Steering Death Wobble — JL generation

Death Wobble documented on JL too — despite revised steering geometry vs JK. Less frequent than the predecessor, but NHTSA complaints on record. Causes identical: tie rods, damper, wheel bearings.

300–1,500 $ from 50,000 km
!! Body Weld seam water leak

Welded seams on the floor and sills let water in during rain or washing. JL-specific issue from revised body construction.

100–500 $ from 20,000 km
!! HVAC A/C refrigerant leak

A/C loses refrigerant through leaking lines — condenser and line fittings damaged in rough off-road operation.

200–800 $ from 50,000 km
! Electronics Start-stop system malfunction

Start-stop system deactivates unexpectedly or prevents engine start — software fault or AGM battery wear. Known JL issue.

100–500 $ from 30,000 km
