Engine Overview
The Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 is available with 3 engine variants — from 181 to 364 hp.
VM Motori diesel with 240 hp and timing chain. Emissions scandal 2014-2016 ($800M settlement). EGR cooler cracks from thermal fatigue (2020 recall). Oil cooler can fail → oil/coolant cross-contamination → engine death. Higher consumption after software update (AEM). Cheap on the used market due to Dieselgate echo — fundamentally solid engine with clean recall documentation.
- !! Oil cooler gasket failure from 80,000 km
Oil cooler gasket fails — worst case mixes oil and coolant. Occurs on vehicles from ~50k miles. Together with EGR cooler failure, the most expensive risk on the EcoDiesel.
Symptoms: Milky oil, coolant loss, oil spots, overheating warning - !! EGR cooler failure (2020 recall) from 80,000 km
EGR cooler cracks from thermal fatigue — exhaust gases and coolant mix. 2020 recall for affected vehicles. Root cause: material weakness in early EcoDiesel design.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating, white smoke, EGR fault code - !! Fuel injector failure from 100,000 km
Injectors fail prematurely from contamination, wear or incorrect fueling. Severe cases have required replacement of up to 14 injectors plus fuel lines. One of the most expensive EcoDiesel risks alongside oil cooler and EGR failures.
Symptoms: Rough running, misfires, black smoke, power loss, fuel smell

Most-produced FCA/Stellantis engine — used in Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, RAM, Dodge and 20+ models. Rocker arm/lifter tick is subject of a 2022 class action lawsuit. Plastic oil cooler housing leaks at high mileage — worst case mixes oil and coolant ("chocolate foam"). Dorman metal replacement as permanent fix. Change oil every 5,000 miles and react at the first tick: 200k+ miles realistic.
- !! Oil cooler housing leak from 80,000 km
Plastic oil cooler housing leaks externally or causes oil/coolant mixing ("chocolate milkshake"). Typical from 50k miles. Dorman metal replacement (Dorman 917-114) is the permanent fix — OEM plastic part fails again.
Symptoms: Oil loss, coolant in oil (milky), overheating, oil spots under engine - !! Cylinder head crack — early models 2011-2013 from 100,000 km
Early Pentastar cylinder heads (2011-2013) crack from thermal stress. Design flaw in the coolant channel layout — revised head from 2014 onwards. The most expensive Pentastar repair.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating, white smoke, milky oil - !! Water pump failure from 100,000 km
Water pump leaks or fails — internal seal failure, corrosion or impeller wear. Multiple repeat failures documented on some vehicles. Use Gates or Mopar branded parts; OEM has a high repeat failure rate.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating, squealing from engine bay
+ 3 more engine weaknesses + vehicle weaknesses
The cult V8 of the Mopar world — 360 hp with unmistakable Hemi sound. MDS (cylinder deactivation) is the problem: deactivated lifters receive no oil, needle bearings run dry on the cam lobe. Hemi Tick is NOT a normal sound but an early warning shot — MDS Delete with Hellcat lifters is the only permanent fix. Don't confuse exhaust manifold tick (harmless) with lifter tick (dangerous)! Sounds glorious, drinks heavily.
- !! MDS lifter failure — cylinder deactivation destroys camshaft from 100,000 km
MDS cylinder deactivation shuts down 4 cylinders — deactivated lifters get no oil, needle bearings run dry on the cam lobe. Metal shavings in oil, camshaft destruction follows. MDS Delete with Hellcat lifters is the only permanent fix.
Symptoms: Loud ticking/knocking at operating temp, misfires, rough running, oil pressure drop - !! Timing chain snaps — MDS mode (Recall P01) from 120,000 km
Timing chain snaps during MDS cylinder deactivation at 2,300-2,800 RPM at highway speed — typically without warning. Interference engine: bent valves and piston damage guaranteed. FCA Recall P01 (free repair, even out of warranty) for 2009-2014. Most at risk: frequent highway driving with active cylinder deactivation.
Symptoms: Sudden metallic clanking at highway speed, engine dies, usually without prior warning - !! Water pump failure from 100,000 km
Water pump leaks or fails at higher mileage. Plastic impeller separates from the metal shaft, coolant escapes gradually.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating, squealing from the engine bay

Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer case NV245 — premature wear NV245 transfer case clutch pack wears from poor fluid or extended service intervals. Failure shows as clunking, front axle binding, or locking in 4-High. Actuator motor failure leads to incorrect gear engagement. Fluid change every 36,000 miles recommended. Symptoms: Clunking while driving, front axle binds, 4WD error message, transfer case locks in 4H from 100,000 km | High | |
| 545RFE/65RFE harsh shifting 545RFE/65RFE automatic transmission shifts harshly or erratically — valve body wears, torque converter slips. Especially on 3.6L versions from ~50k miles. Symptoms: Hard shift jolts, shudder on acceleration, torque converter slip from 80,000 km | High |
