Hyundai Veloster FS

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 2 engine variants · How we rate

The Hyundai Veloster FS (2011–2018) is one of the decade's more unusual concepts: three asymmetric doors, sports car looks on a compact platform. As a design statement it worked. The engine has a more complicated story.

Engine: G4FD (1.6L Gamma GDI, 138 hp) — direct injection, 6-speed manual or 6-speed DCT. The core problem: connecting rod bearing damage caused by metal debris left in oil galleries during manufacturing. The debris circulates in the engine oil and starves the rod bearings of lubrication — potential progression to catastrophic engine failure. Hyundai issued a recall and an extended warranty (15 years / 150,000 miles in the US) covering affected 2012–2017 models. Early 2012–2013 cars are the most commonly affected. Symptoms: engine knock or ticking during warmup, sudden power loss, excessive oil consumption. Out-of-warranty engine replacement: used unit $2,200–$4,400, new engine $5,500–$8,800.

For any car outside warranty coverage: complete service history is non-negotiable. Change the oil immediately after purchase and flush the engine. The service record is the only insurance on these cars.

The DCT carries the usual dry-clutch traits: launch judder in stop-and-go, actuator wear. Manual is the right choice here.

The asymmetric 3-door body has age-sensitive door seals — water ingress into the rear passenger footwell from dried rubber gaskets is documented.

Test-drive checklist: Cold start — 30 seconds idle, listen for knock. Full-throttle run for power dropout. DCT hill start. Rear door seals — check rear footwell carpet for moisture staining.

2026 market: 2011–2013 $4,400–$7,700 (early cars carry bearing risk). 2014–2017 $7,700–$13,200. Insider pick: 2015–2017, 6-speed manual, complete service history — bearing issue often resolved by prior replacement, DCT risk eliminated.

Engine Overview

The Hyundai Veloster FS is available with one engine variant at 129 hp.

1.6L GDI (Gamma) · Petrol· 140 PS
2011 2015

Naturally aspirated direct-injection from the Gamma family — 1.6L with 97–99 kW. Intake valve carbon buildup from GDI is the dominant theme — valves soot up without port washing. High-pressure fuel pump can fail at high mileage. Valve stem seals wear faster under GDI operation. Thermostat fails early. Timing chain stretches. An engine that deserves regular walnut-blasting valve cleaning.

  • !! High-pressure fuel pump failure from 110,000 km

The GDi high-pressure fuel pump can fail. Using low-quality fuel or extended oil change intervals significantly increases the risk.

Symptoms: Extended cranking time, stumbling at low rpm, engine cut-out, fuel pressure fault code.
    600–1,400 $
  • !! Valve carbon buildup (GDi system) from 70,000 km

GDi direct injection no longer washes the intake valves with fuel. Carbon deposits impair gas exchange, leading to rough running and power loss.

Symptoms: Rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, increased fuel consumption, misfires on a cold engine.
    300–700 $
  • !! Timing chain stretch from 120,000 km

Despite a robust roller chain, many drivers report chain noise from 100,000–150,000 km. In extreme cases the chain can jump and strike valves.

Symptoms: Rattling from the engine bay, particularly after cold start; check engine light from camshaft sensor fault.
    500–1,000 $
