Hyundai ix35
Modern NA with dual CVVT. Reliable and adequately strong for compact SUVs — no drama, no surprises.
Family SUV, does what it says
The ix35 is a sensible family crossover. Solid, dependable, sporting ambition nowhere to be found.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The timing chain stretches noticeably earlier under high-rpm use. The chain rarely breaks outright, but jumps frequently, causing valve-to-piston contact. With gentle driving, 300,000 km service life is possible.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, later also when warm; sudden engine damage from a jumped chain without warning.
A failing catalytic converter destroys itself through fuel ingress. Ceramic particles are drawn into the combustion chambers and cause cylinder bore scoring, leading to complete engine failure.
Symptoms: Knocking, progressive oil consumption, power loss, blue exhaust clouds; engine seizure in the final stage.
Hyundai recalled Nu engines (including G4NA) because inconsistent heat treatment of the oil scraper rings resulted in excessive hardness. The rings fragment and score cylinder bore surfaces. Result: extreme oil consumption, engine knock, bearing failure.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light, engine knock, engine stall, sudden power loss
The G4NA Nu is part of the class-action lawsuit against Hyundai for systemic oil consumption caused by defective piston rings. Oil scraper rings made from material that is too hard break and cause cylinder bore abrasion. Consumption can exceed 1 L/1,000 km.
Symptoms: Very high oil consumption, blue smoke, oil pressure warning, knocking
The G4NA water pump can develop premature bearing damage, accompanied by coolant leaks through a failing shaft seal. Replacement on this engine is more involved than on older Alpha/Beta units and requires partial disassembly of the front-end drive.
Symptoms: Coolant dripping from the bottom of the engine, rising temperature, pump noise on cold engine
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Vehicles from production October 2011 to June 2012 were recalled due to faulty seatbelt pretensioners. In an accident the belt might not tension adequately.
Hyundai recalled ix35 models with 1.7 CRDi engine from production October 2011 to April 2012. The brake booster could fail, significantly reducing braking force.
The steering joints on the ix35 are the most common inspection complaint. Worn joints lead to imprecise steering and are a safety risk.
The bonnet on the ix35 LM tends to flutter at motorway speeds. The cause is usually a weakening bonnet latch or worn rubber buffers. Safety-relevant — check carefully.
Frequent problem on the ix35: the battery discharges through a faulty starter motor or interior lighting that does not switch itself off.
Like other Hyundai models of this era, the ix35 shows rust on the tailgate, especially at the lower edge and around mounting points.
Inspection regularly flags headlights and tail lights on the ix35 LM. Bulb failures, connector corrosion and moisture ingress into headlights are known weak points.
Seats and interior trims on the ix35 LM produce squeaking and creaking noises with age. The most common area is the seat runner and B-pillar trim that works on road undulations.
