Hyundai i30

D4FB 1.6L CRDi 136 hp Manual Wagon 2016โ€“2019
โ€“ Be Careful
Engine D4FB โ€“ Be Careful 3,750โ€“10,950 $

Bread-and-butter turbodiesel with decent grunt. Proven unit, though the dual-mass flywheel and DPF are the usual wear items.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Turbo compact with some spark

The i30 PD with the 1.4 T-GDI is properly brisk and genuinely fun on a twisty road. One of the most underrated compacts out there.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! EGR cooler coolant leak

The EGR cooler can develop internal leaks and route coolant into the intake tract. Engine damage from coolant combustion and overheating is a real risk.

Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust, falling coolant level without visible external leaks, engine overheating.

400โ€“1,000 $ from 150,000 km
!! VGT turbocharger premature failure

The VGT turbocharger on the D4FB is prone to early failure, sometimes as early as 30,000 km. Before failure oil consumption rises to up to 400 g/1,000 km. Vacuum lines corrode and the VTG actuator seizes.

Symptoms: Whistling noises even at low mileage, power loss, heavy oil consumption, blue exhaust cloud on acceleration.

700โ€“1,800 $ from 90,000 km
!! Timing chain stretch

The upper timing chain stretches from approximately 120,000โ€“150,000 km, audible as rattling on cold start. If ignored, chain skip or breakage with engine damage threatens.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling immediately after cold start that subsides once the engine reaches operating temperature. Check engine light for camshaft phase error.

400โ€“900 $ from 130,000 km
!! EGR valve fouling

EGR valve and intake manifold with swirl flaps coke up heavily during short-trip use. The swirl flaps break in advanced cases and can be sucked into the engine.

Symptoms: Sooty exhaust clouds, power loss, check engine light, idle oscillation, engine in limp mode.

300โ€“900 $ from 100,000 km
!! Particulate filter clogging

Frequent short trips prevent complete DPF regeneration. Filter clogs and engine enters limp mode. Replacement is expensive; filter cleaning possible if caught early.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, noticeable power loss, engine limp mode, increased fuel consumption.

800โ€“2,500 $ from 120,000 km
!! Injector coding lost

Delphi injectors in the D4FB can lose their individual coding after approximately 8 million injection cycles. Without re-coding on a test bench the engine runs rough and knocks.

Symptoms: Engine running becomes rough after extended operation, knocking, power loss with no clear fault code.

300โ€“800 $ from 200,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 11

!! Other Diesel recall: oil pump filter screen blocked

On the 1.6 CRDi diesel (10/2018โ€“07/2020) the tandem pump filter screen can be blocked by belt fibres, which in extreme cases leads to engine damage and brake booster failure.

0โ€“0 $
!! Other Diesel recall: tandem pump filter screen blocked

Design fault in the tandem pump filter screen on diesel engines October 2018โ€“July 2020: belt drive fibres can block the screen, leading to brake booster failure and engine damage.

0โ€“0 $
!! Brakes Brake disc wear / inspection defects

Inspection data shows above-average brake disc wear on the i30 PD, especially at the second inspection. Brakes remain a classic weak point of the model line.

200โ€“450 $ from 60,000 km
!! Rust Exhaust system / underbody corrosion

Defective exhaust systems and underbody corrosion are documented weak points of the i30 PD. Inspection reports flag exhaust and underbody parts, especially on salt-affected vehicles.

200โ€“800 $ from 80,000 km
! Other Recall: sunroof motor defective (2018)

Vehicles from model year 2018 were recalled due to a defective sunroof motor. The sunroof can no longer be closed.

0โ€“0 $
! Electronics Infotainment crashes and USB instability

The infotainment system on the i30 PD freezes or reboots. USB connections drop spontaneously. Software updates from the dealer are frequently necessary.

0โ€“200 $ from 40,000 km
! Brakes Braking system inspection complaint

Braking system and suspension are recurring inspection complaint points on the i30 PD. Brake pads and discs should be checked regularly.

150โ€“450 $ from 70,000 km
! Suspension Strut top mount clicking noises

Front strut top mounts on the i30 PD produce clicking and knocking noises, especially on poor road surfaces. Anti-roll bar links and strut mounts are typical inspection complaints.

100โ€“350 $ from 80,000 km
! Other Recall: TPMS tyre pressure sensor fault

2020โ€“2021 models are affected by a recall in which the tyre pressure monitoring system can give false warnings or display the system status incorrectly. Firmware update required.

0โ€“0 $
! Brakes Brake disc wear and oil loss

Oil losses from engine and gearbox as well as worn brake discs cost the inspection sticker. Average inspection results compared to class leaders.

200โ€“500 $ from 80,000 km
! Electronics Sunroof motor recall and USB instability

Recall for 2018 models: sunroof motor can fail and disable the anti-trap protection. Additionally USB connections occasionally cause system crashes in the infotainment.
