Hyundai i20
Tried-and-tested Gamma unit with smooth power delivery. Chain and CVVT keep it running for the long haul.
Daily driver, no more
The i20 PB handles well enough but has zero emotional content. Solid, not stirring.
Engine Weaknesses 5
Plastic timing chain tensioner and guide rails wear prematurely. Delayed oil changes and high-rpm operation significantly accelerate wear.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start that diminishes after warm-up; in advanced cases constant chain noise; engine fault codes from camshaft phase errors.
Aluminium block with thin cylinder liners tends to go oval with wear. The result is progressive oil consumption from worn piston rings, particularly in urban use.
Symptoms: Blue smoke when accelerating, dropping oil level between changes; rough engine running; oil consumption above 0.5 L/1,000 km.
The G4FC Gamma develops oil consumption from worn valve stem seals from around 100,000 km. Often occurs alongside the timing chain tensioner issue. Throttle body cleaning and seal replacement stabilises the engine.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, rising oil consumption, fouled spark plugs
The G4FC timing chain guide rails wear faster than the chain itself when oil is dirty. From around 120,000 km cracks can appear in the plastic rail, amplifying chain noise and causing sprocket damage.
Symptoms: Rattling from the timing chain area, chain noise does not diminish with a warm engine
G4FC engines tend to throttle body deposits in urban use, causing idle hunting and rough cold starts. Cleaning recommended every 60,000 km; throttle body adaptation in the ECU is required after cleaning.
Symptoms: Idle hunting, rough cold start, occasional stalling
Vehicle Weaknesses 12
More than 16,000 i20 PB models from 2008–2012 were recalled due to overheating risk at the 12-volt socket. Use with the tyre repair kit compressor can create a fire hazard.
Recall for approx. 16,765 vehicles (2008–2012): defective 12V socket can overheat when used with a tyre repair compressor, creating a fire hazard.
The EPS motor on the i20 PB overheats when manoeuvring at low speed and shuts down protectively. Steering becomes heavy for minutes until it cools down. Typical after intensive turning manoeuvres.
Suspension springs break on the i20 PB after extended use. Inspection flags broken springs as a known weak point. Typical from 80,000–100,000 km, especially on poor roads.
On the i20 PB, tie rod ends can wear out prematurely, leading to imprecise steering and tyre wear.
Window regulator motors fail on the i20 PB; the glass can barely move or stops entirely. The problem mainly affects the driver's side and becomes more common after 80,000 km.
The parking brake cable and disc on the i20 PB rust quickly; the brake sticks in wet weather or after standing for extended periods. Inspection regularly flags the parking brake.
Brake discs and pads wear heavily. Inspection regularly flags the handbrake, brake line corrosion and defective brake function. High defect rate at inspections.
Battery failures are particularly common on 2011–2014 models. Window regulator motors fail over time; windows are difficult to open or close.
Clutch wears above average. First gear is difficult to engage, reverse occasionally blocks. Typical city driving problem.
The seat upholstery on the i20 PB shows wear ripples early from getting in and out. The fabric loses its shape relatively quickly, especially on the driver's seat.
The electrically adjustable door mirrors on the i20 PB creak or squeak when adjusted or folded, indicating plastic wear at the pivot points.
