Hyundai i20 N
The Gamma 1.6 T-GDi in the i20 N is not a warmed-over economy motor — Hyundai rebuilt the bottom end for sustained high-rev abuse. 150 kW from 1,593 cc, electronically controlled limited-slip diff, intake sound piped into the cabin via resonator. In N mode, throttle sharpens up and steering gains 15% more feedback. The consensus: no droning on long hauls, honest turbo pull from 2,500 rpm. Check the intake valves every 60,000 km with GDI.
Best hot hatch bang for buck
The i20 N is what the Fiesta ST always wanted to be: a genuine track weapon in a small-car body. Mechanical LSD, 204 hp, no wheelspin on corner exit — just pure grin. No adaptive dampers, no electronic trickery, just honest chassis tuning that lets the driver feel everything.
Engine Weaknesses 5
Individual reports show head gasket failure on the i30N under sustained hard use. Coolant in the oil and white smoke are clear indicators. Affected: early 2019 production.
Symptoms: White exhaust smoke; coolant level drops quickly; oil shows milky discoloration; engine misfires.
With intensive track use without adequate motorsport-grade oil, the G4FP connecting rod bearings can wear prematurely. Standard engine oil is not suitable for sustained high-rpm track use.
Symptoms: Metallic knock from the engine block; oil pressure drop at high rpm; check engine light.
As a pure direct-injection engine the G4FP accumulates carbon deposits on the intake valves. The process accelerates noticeably with frequent short-trip driving.
Symptoms: Hesitation when cold; power dip at low rpm; slightly increased fuel consumption.
The 7-speed DCT in the i30N shows increased clutch wear with intensive track use and launch control activation. Multiple reports of clutch noise at high mileage.
Symptoms: Grinding noise on pull-away; clutch shudder; delayed engagement; gearbox warning message.
Kappa 1.0 naturally aspirated engine with timing chain shows noise with delayed oil changes or incorrect oil viscosity. Engines in compact vehicles are usually well maintained.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, diminishing after warm-up.
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Vehicles from model year 2020 were recalled due to a fault in the eCall emergency call system. The system must be rectified via a software update.
The intelligent manual transmission (iMT) on the i20 BC3 shows actuator faults. Gears cannot be engaged without force, clutch re-engages immediately. Dealer replaced the vehicle under warranty.
The horn on the i20 BC3 intermittently stops working for days at a time then resumes. Multiple forum members report this intermittent issue; the cause is a loose contact or faulty horn relay.
Online services (Bluelink, navigation) fail on the i20 BC3 after a few months and cannot be reset manually. eCall does not work without a network connection, safety system disabled.
The steering wheel clear coat on the i20 BC3 starts peeling from around 20,000 km. Warranty claims have been rejected multiple times in forum reports as no mechanical defect was classified.
Recurring problem with the rear brakes: squealing from the rear axle points to known issues with rear brake discs carried over from the previous generation.
2020 model year vehicles have restricted eCall functionality according to a recall. Software issues in the infotainment system cause crashes, especially on early production examples.
Owners of the i20 BC3 report rattling noises on the driver and passenger side as well as occasional squealing from the rear brakes — acknowledged by Hyundai as a known issue.
