Hyundai i20
Updated turbo triple with optional 48V mild hybrid. Decent power from modest displacement, sips fuel.
Fresh face, tame heart
The new i20 BC3 looks sharp and packs solid tech, but base engines keep things firmly in sensible territory.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The G3LE turbo requires adequate oil supply on cold start. Starting too quickly after a long standstill or poor oil quality damages the turbine bearing. Oil changes every 10,000 km maximum are mandatory.
Symptoms: Whining from the turbo area, power loss, blue smoke on acceleration from cold start.
The G3LE Smartstream T-GDi also lacks port injection; intake valves carbon up regularly from around 60,000 km and reduce power and smoothness.
Symptoms: Hesitation under partial load, sluggish throttle response after idle, increased fuel consumption.
Although Hyundai revised the chain tensioner in 2020, the timing chain remains vulnerable to poor oil quality or infrequent changes. Regular short oil change intervals are mandatory on this engine.
Symptoms: Cold-start rattle, camshaft position faults, in the worst case check engine light with chain jump risk.
The G3LE T-GDI shows a tendency toward fuel dilution of the engine oil in hybrid operation and on short trips, due to multi-injection strategies used to prevent LSPI. Shorter oil change intervals are required.
Symptoms: Oil level above maximum, petrol smell in engine oil, increased engine wear with long oil change intervals
The Smartstream engine management occasionally shows sensor failures (camshaft position sensor, crankshaft sensor). Fault codes can appear temporarily with moisture or vibration.
Symptoms: Check engine light, occasional starting difficulties, rough engine running without clear defect.
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Vehicles from model year 2020 were recalled due to a fault in the eCall emergency call system. The system must be rectified via a software update.
The intelligent manual transmission (iMT) on the i20 BC3 shows actuator faults. Gears cannot be engaged without force, clutch re-engages immediately. Dealer replaced the vehicle under warranty.
The horn on the i20 BC3 intermittently stops working for days at a time then resumes. Multiple forum members report this intermittent issue; the cause is a loose contact or faulty horn relay.
Online services (Bluelink, navigation) fail on the i20 BC3 after a few months and cannot be reset manually. eCall does not work without a network connection, safety system disabled.
The steering wheel clear coat on the i20 BC3 starts peeling from around 20,000 km. Warranty claims have been rejected multiple times in forum reports as no mechanical defect was classified.
Recurring problem with the rear brakes: squealing from the rear axle points to known issues with rear brake discs carried over from the previous generation.
2020 model year vehicles have restricted eCall functionality according to a recall. Software issues in the infotainment system cause crashes, especially on early production examples.
Owners of the i20 BC3 report rattling noises on the driver and passenger side as well as occasional squealing from the rear brakes β acknowledged by Hyundai as a known issue.
