Honda Insight ZE4

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

5.0 / 5.0 · Based on 1 engine variants · How we rate

The 3rd-gen Insight (ZE4, 2019–2022) is a Civic-platform hybrid sedan dressed up with extra sound deadening and grown-up styling — a real-world 50+ mpg commuter, not a rebadge. The LEB8 1.5 two-motor hybrid is the heart of it. Honda discontinued it after 2022 and folded it into the Civic Hybrid, so it's cheap now.

Test-drive checklist: Exercise the touchscreen hard — CarPlay, audio, nav — because 2019–2020 infotainment units crash repeatedly with no software cure (only unit replacement). Note any unexplained phantom emergency braking (active NHTSA investigation EA25002) and check the dash and A-pillar for rattles and wind noise. Confirm a reliable 12V start (early-car drain reports) and that the DENSO fuel-pump recall (23V858) is done.

2026 market: 2019 cars run about $9,900–19,600 (clean around $14,000), 2020 around $16,700–27,300, 2022 about $16,000–24,000.

Insider pick: a 2020 or 2021 EX — the bigger 8-inch screen, alloys and key safety gear at the value sweet spot, dodging the worst 2019 infotainment and 12V teething.

Engine Overview

The Honda Insight ZE4 is available with one engine variant at 153 hp.

1.5L i-MMD e:HEV · Petrol Hybrid· 153 PS
2019 2022

1.5L i-MMD e:HEV — Honda's dual-motor hybrid system, fourth generation. Engine runs in Atkinson cycle, primarily drives the generator — propulsion is mostly handled by the electric motor. In city traffic predominantly electric, the engine kicks in barely noticeably. No conventional transmission, no shift shocks. Lithium-ion battery instead of NiMH like the predecessor — significantly more durable. Limited long-term data (market launch 2020), but the e:HEV architecture has been proven in Japan since 2013. No systematic engine weaknesses known so far.

  • ! 12V auxiliary battery drains during extended standstill

The Jazz GR e:HEV draws current from the 12V auxiliary battery even when parked. After as little as 10–15 days without driving, the voltage can drop to critical levels.

Symptoms: Vehicle won't start after several days of standstill, 12V battery deeply discharged

Vehicle Weaknesses

Infotainment freezes

Display sporadically freezes or reboots. Typical Honda issue on the 10th gen Civic platform.

Symptoms: Display black, touch unresponsive, reboot needed

12V battery drains (light use)

The Insight has no alternator — the 12V AGM battery is charged only via the DC-DC converter from the hybrid battery. On short trips and long standstills a key-off draw drains it prematurely. A correct AGM charger helps.

Symptoms: Dead battery after sitting, no-start, frequent battery replacement.
