Honda CR-Z
1.5L i-VTEC naturally aspirated with integrated IMA electric motor (Integrated Motor Assist) in the CR-Z: the combustion engine produces 83 kW, the electric motor adds up to 10 kW of assist, giving 89 kW combined system output. Three drive modes (ECON/Normal/Sport) noticeably alter throttle response and IMA readiness. The main weak point is the ageing NiMH high-voltage battery, which degrades significantly after 10–15 years.
CRX Reborn with a Hybrid Heart
Honda's attempt to resurrect the CRX — and it comes closer than anyone expected. Sport mode: heavier steering, sharper throttle, instant IMA shove to 6,000 rpm. The chassis is tight, 1,180 kg is palpable. Not fast, but alive and honest. A proper little sports car that happens to run a hybrid powertrain.
Engine Weaknesses 4
The NiMH IMA high-voltage battery degrades noticeably after 10–15 years or 150,000 km. A new OEM module costs up to €3,000; reconditioned units start at around €700.
Symptoms: IMA warning light active, noticeably reduced hybrid assist, engine starts alone more frequently
A faulty DC/DC converter in the IMA system disables the hybrid function entirely. Diagnosis and replacement require a high-voltage specialist.
Symptoms: IMA system completely shut down, hybrid function unavailable, IMA warning light permanently active
Ignition coils on the LEA engine can fail prematurely due to ageing or worn spark plugs. Common on vehicles without regular spark plug maintenance (interval: 30,000 km).
Symptoms: Engine hesitation and misfires, engine warning light, rough idle. Fault is more pronounced in damp conditions and heat.
The 12V starter battery in the CR-Z typically lasts only 2–3 years instead of the usual 5. The hybrid system places heavy demand on the auxiliary battery.
Symptoms: Vehicle won't start after short standstills, 12V battery repeatedly deep-discharged
Vehicle Weaknesses 4
The IMA hybrid battery lasts around 8 years. Once degraded, the electric motor assistance drops out.
Rear shock absorbers can start leaking as early as around 20,000 km.
The rear brake discs quickly develop grooves and rust when the mechanical brakes are used infrequently.
Creaking and rattling from the boot and dashboard are known issues.
