Ford Mustang Mach-E
Single-motor rear-wheel drive Mustang Mach-E Standard Range. 75.7–76 kWh battery. Approximately 198–201 kW peak output.
Electric SUV
The Mach-E with 273 hp and rear-wheel drive: quick in a straight line, typically SUV in corners. No Mustang feeling.
Engine Weaknesses 6
DC fast charging and frequent full-load driving can overheat the high-voltage contactors in the Mach-E SR. Ford carried out a recall (23S56) for 2021–2022 models.
Symptoms: HV battery warning, power reduction, vehicle unable to charge or drive
Main HV battery contactors can overheat and fail with frequent DC charging. Ford recalled all vehicles before May 2022; battery switch box replacement required.
Symptoms: Powertrain fault warning, reduced power, vehicle won't start after charging.
Ford recalled 2021–2022 Mach-E vehicles due to possible overheating of the HV battery main contactors. Repeated DC fast charging or performance driving can deform the contacts. Fix: OTA or dealer software update.
Symptoms: Vehicle suddenly loses drive power while moving; difficulty starting after DC fast charge; warning messages in instrument cluster after multiple hard acceleration runs.
The 12V auxiliary battery system on the Mach-E SR RWD shows well-known discharge problems during extended parking or with persistently active consumers. Ford has issued several software updates.
Symptoms: "Electrical system discharge" warning, vehicle won't start, charging process won't start
At high ambient temperatures and without a heat pump (the Mach-E has none), battery thermal management can reach its limits. Charging speed is automatically throttled when battery temperature rises.
Symptoms: Reduced charging speed in heat, range reduction in summer, charging throttled despite sufficient charge level
The Mach-E's 12V auxiliary battery is only recharged when the HV battery is being charged. With long periods of standing without HV charging, it discharges. The software charging system is insufficient to maintain the 12V battery fully.
Symptoms: Warning 'Service required due to electrical system discharge' in FordPass app; vehicle shows 'System Off to Save Battery'; vehicle will not start.
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The Mach-E's 12-volt auxiliary battery doesn't charge during HV charging. In cold conditions in particular it can fully deplete and lock the vehicle — doors, control units and start no longer function.
Ford recalled Mach-E vehicles because the main contactors (relays) of the high-voltage battery could overheat during repeated DC fast charging or full power demand, leading to malfunctions.
Ford recalled over 315,000 Mach-E vehicles (model years 2021–2025): if the 12V battery drops below 8.4V, the electronic door latches (e-Latch) lose power. Passengers can become trapped. A PCM software update resolves the issue.
Consumer Reports withdrew its recommendation for the Mach-E due to poor reliability. Frequent software faults affect charging, apps, ADAS systems and climate control. OTA updates help but don't permanently resolve all issues.
Mach-E owners report unreliable AC charging. Charging stops without error messages or doesn't start at all. The cause is partly a software fault in the on-board charger (OBC), partly failed charging control units. Ford released several OTA fixes.
The large SYNC 4 system in the Mach-E regularly freezes or responds sluggishly to inputs. Consumer Reports withdrew its recommendation for the Mach-E partly due to this infotainment instability. Over-the-air updates alleviate the problem.
Owners describe the build quality of early Mach-E models as disappointing. Uneven panel gaps on doors, bonnets and bumpers as well as poor interior plastic quality were criticised. Vehicles built before June 2022 particularly affected.
