Ford Mustang Mach-E
Dual-motor AWD Mustang Mach-E Standard Range. 75.7β76 kWh battery. 269β329 hp system output depending on model year.
Base AWD
All-wheel drive and moderate power: practical, but no excitement.
Engine Weaknesses 6
On some Mach-E AWD variants the rear motor malfunctions, causing the vehicle to fall back to FWD mode. Powertrain fault warnings and reduced performance are the symptoms.
Symptoms: Powertrain fault, AWD system inactive, power reduction, vehicle running on front motor only
Main HV battery contactors can overheat from repeated fast charging and full-performance use. Ford recalled all Mach-E vehicles before May 2022; switch box replaced free of charge.
Symptoms: HV battery warning light, reduced drive, vehicle won't start after charging.
Ford recalled 2021β2022 Mach-E vehicles due to possible overheating of the HV battery main contactors. Repeated DC fast charging or performance driving can deform the contacts. Fix: OTA or dealer software update.
Symptoms: Vehicle suddenly loses drive power while moving; difficulty starting after DC fast charge; warning messages in instrument cluster after multiple hard acceleration runs.
The Mach-E SR AWD with dual motors shows the same 12V discharge issue as all Mach-E variants. The AWD system with additional electronics can place greater load on the 12V battery.
Symptoms: Electrical system fault warning, charging process won't start, vehicle unresponsive to start
The Mach-E SR AWD with dual motors can push battery thermal management to its limits during repeated hard sprints. Power limiting protects the battery from overheating.
Symptoms: Power reduction after multiple hard sprints, charging throttling, battery warning
The Mach-E's 12V auxiliary battery is only recharged when the HV battery is being charged. With long periods of standing without HV charging, it discharges. The software charging system is insufficient to maintain the 12V battery fully.
Symptoms: Warning 'Service required due to electrical system discharge' in FordPass app; vehicle shows 'System Off to Save Battery'; vehicle will not start.
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The Mach-E's 12-volt auxiliary battery doesn't charge during HV charging. In cold conditions in particular it can fully deplete and lock the vehicle β doors, control units and start no longer function.
Ford recalled Mach-E vehicles because the main contactors (relays) of the high-voltage battery could overheat during repeated DC fast charging or full power demand, leading to malfunctions.
Ford recalled over 315,000 Mach-E vehicles (model years 2021β2025): if the 12V battery drops below 8.4V, the electronic door latches (e-Latch) lose power. Passengers can become trapped. A PCM software update resolves the issue.
Consumer Reports withdrew its recommendation for the Mach-E due to poor reliability. Frequent software faults affect charging, apps, ADAS systems and climate control. OTA updates help but don't permanently resolve all issues.
Mach-E owners report unreliable AC charging. Charging stops without error messages or doesn't start at all. The cause is partly a software fault in the on-board charger (OBC), partly failed charging control units. Ford released several OTA fixes.
The large SYNC 4 system in the Mach-E regularly freezes or responds sluggishly to inputs. Consumer Reports withdrew its recommendation for the Mach-E partly due to this infotainment instability. Over-the-air updates alleviate the problem.
Owners describe the build quality of early Mach-E models as disappointing. Uneven panel gaps on doors, bonnets and bumpers as well as poor interior plastic quality were criticised. Vehicles built before June 2022 particularly affected.
