Ford Ka RBT

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 1 engine variants · How we rate

The Ford Ka I (RBT, 1996–2008) is a small, charming city car built on the Fiesta platform, with its distinctive New Edge styling. As a second car for urban use it's surprisingly nimble, with sharp steering, a firm chassis and rock-bottom running costs. The mechanicals are simple and tough: the 1.3 Endura-E is an old-school OHV engine with adjustable valve clearances that runs forever with basic care. That mechanical simplicity is a big part of the Ka's appeal — it's almost unbreakable. The CORE PROBLEM, however, is rust, and lots of it. Sills, underbody, wheel arches and suspension turrets corrode badly, often from the inside out. Many Kas today are economic write-offs because the structural shell has rusted through — an MOT failure and expensive to weld. Before buying, get the car on a lift: tap the sills, check the strut tops and floor pans, look behind the arch liners. A Ka that looks tidy on top can be completely gone underneath. Pay a bit more for a rust-free example rather than taking on a welding project. Other typical weak spots: the rear silencer reliably rusts through, though replacement is cheap. The blower often only works on speed 4 because the resistor pack or its connector melts — a well-known, easy fix. The universal joint in the steering column wears over time, showing up as play and a knocking feel. At the rear, the drum brakes tend to seize, especially after the car has stood for a while. Buying advice: focus on rust, rust and more rust — everything else is minor and cheap to sort. A well-kept Ka with intact underseal and dry sills is a cheap, dependable runabout. If you can weld, or find a genuinely solid example, the Ka will keep going for years.

Engine Overview

The Ford Ka RBT is available with one engine variant at 49 hp.

Ka 1.3i · Petrol· 49–70 PS
1996 2008

An archaic old-school OHV naturally aspirated engine: simple, robust and easy to service with manageable technology. Output is modest, but the engine forgives a lot and runs for ages with decent care. Valve clearance needs checking, and depending on the version the carburettor or early injection can be temperamental. Little electronics means few expensive surprises.

  • !! Head Gasket Leaking from 120,000 km

The 1.3 Endura-E OHV tends to leaking head gaskets at higher mileages. White smoke from the exhaust and coolant loss without visible external leak are typical signs.

Symptoms: White smoke from the exhaust, coolant level drops, oil-water emulsion visible in the engine oil
    300–600 $
  • !! Camshaft Wear — Early Production from 100,000 km

Endura-E engines up to end of 1997 had camshafts that were too soft. Ford revised the camshaft; older examples can show significant wear with neglected oil changes.

Symptoms: Clattering noises from the valvetrain, rough running, power loss at higher revs
    400–800 $
  • !! Ignition Distributor Worn from 80,000 km

The classic ignition distributor in the Endura-E ages and wears. Moisture, cracks in the distributor cap and worn contacts cause misfires. Regular replacement is recommended.

Symptoms: Juddering and misfires at idle and under load, difficult cold start, rough running
    50–150 $

Vehicle Weaknesses

WeaknessCost
Severe body rust

Almost all older Ka RBT models show heavy rust on door sills, door corners, fuel filler surround and tailgate hinge. Lack of factory cavity sealant promotes early rust-through.

Symptoms: Visible blisters and rust-through on lower door edges, sills and tailgate hinge, crumbling door sill trim.
from 80,000 km

!Underbody and sill corrosion

The Ka RBT rusts particularly severely on the underbody, sills and fuel filler area. Inadequate factory sealant promotes early corrosion. Older examples frequently need welding repairs to structural parts, significantly reducing value.

Symptoms: Visible rust on sills, paint blistering, rotten underbody when lifted, corroded-through brake lines
from 120,000 km
