Ford Fiesta
Ford 1.6L Ti-VCT 135 hp variant used in Fiesta Mk7 3-door 2011-2012. Sportier tuning of same 1596cc Sigma block.
Sport Fiesta
With 135 hp and a manual gearbox the Fiesta shows its sporty side. Short throws, real emotion.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The 1.6 Ti-VCT has undersized oil drillings in the cylinder head (pre-2007 production). The VVT phaser fills with oil and rattles on cold start. Ford revised the design from spring 2007; earlier engines are more commonly affected.
Symptoms: Diesel-like rattle on cold start that disappears after warm-up; power drop under hard acceleration
The Sigma/Ti-VCT pencil-type ignition coils fail around 100,000–140,000 km. Typical at 1,500–2,500 rpm under load. Aftermarket coils (BERU) are considered more reliable than budget brands.
Symptoms: Juddering and power loss in the mid-rev range, fault code P030x on OBD, rough idle
The 1.6 Ti-VCT HXJB shares the known weakness of undersized oil drillings in the camshaft adjusters. Oil deposits block the oil pressure flow and lead to rattling and power loss.
Symptoms: Rattling or clattering on cold start, power loss at low revs, occasional OBD fault codes for camshaft position.
The plastic thermostat housing becomes brittle through thermal cycling and vibration, developing hairline cracks. Coolant loss leads to overheating if ignored. Particularly affects Focus Mk1 with the 1.6 Zetec-S.
Symptoms: Coolant level drops without visible puddle on the floor; temperature gauge fluctuates or climbs into the red; coolant smell from the engine bay.
The electronically controlled thermostat on the Ti-VCT tends to fail: the housing ears break off and the flap no longer closes fully. The engine stays below operating temperature and fuel consumption rises.
Symptoms: Temperature gauge stays permanently low, heater barely produces warmth, increased fuel consumption
The idle control valve on the underside of the inlet manifold blocks up with carbon deposits. A typical age-related problem on the over-20-year-old Zetec-S engines in the Focus Mk1 and Fiesta Mk5.
Symptoms: Rough, hunting idle; engine stalls when braking or at traffic lights; rev fluctuations between 600 and 900 rpm at standstill.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Brake lines and fuel lines corrode faster than comparable competitors. TÜV inspection failures due to brake line corrosion are common. Leaking lines are a safety-critical issue.
Brake lines corrode faster than on comparable competitors. On older vehicles there is a risk of line fractures, which can cause complete brake failure. Check thoroughly before buying.
Rear springs break through corrosion at the lowest coil, similar to the predecessor. Shock absorbers leak prematurely and ride quality deteriorates.
A defective auxiliary heater relay results in inadequate cabin warming. The heater blows little or no warm air in cold temperatures. Solution: relay replacement per TSI 70/2010.
Window regulator mechanisms fail and the glass refuses to move or sticks. Steering column stalk (indicators/wipers) responds unreliably or fails completely.
Worn driveshafts create vibrations when accelerating and cornering. Common on vehicles over 100,000 km. Driveshaft bearings and CV boots wear prematurely.
