Ford Fiesta
1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder with DPS6 PowerShift β a brilliant little engine mated to the worst transmission of its generation. The EcoBoost itself is efficient and punchy for its size. But the DPS6 destroys the experience: shudder, hesitation, TCM failure. Anyone who wants this engine should get the manual.
Great engine, catastrophic transmission
The 1.0 EcoBoost is a brilliant three-cylinder β but with the DPS6 PowerShift the experience is ruined. Anyone wanting this engine gets the manual.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Dry clutches glaze from heat in stop-and-go traffic. Shudder/vibration on light acceleration from stop. Some owners had 4-5 replacements before 60k miles. Ford knew before launch. $3B+ class action.
Symptoms: Shudder/vibration on light acceleration from stop, entire car shakes
Thermal degradation of solder joints, moisture intrusion. Vehicle stuck in gear, limp mode, no-start after heat soak. Ford CSP 14M02: one-time replacement through June 2025.
Symptoms: Stuck in one gear, limp mode, 'Transmission Fault' warning, no start after heat
Premature seal wear allows gear oil into dry clutch cavity β contaminated friction plates, accelerated wear.
Symptoms: Clutch shudder suddenly worsens, transmission fluid visible on housing
Vehicle hesitates on launch or rolls back on inclines. 'Fake neutral' β clutch doesn't engage in time. Documented accidents. Ford internally rated as Severity 10 (worst possible).
Symptoms: 1-3 second hesitation on launch, rollback on inclines, sudden power loss
Vehicle Weaknesses 13
The DPS6 dual-clutch gearbox is widely regarded as a serious reliability problem. Shuddering when pulling away, clutch disc wear, and gearbox oil leaks from as early as 30,000β50,000 km. Repair costs up to 6,000 β¬.
Brake lines and fuel lines corrode faster than comparable competitors. TΓV inspection failures due to brake line corrosion are common. Leaking lines are a safety-critical issue.
Brake lines corrode faster than on comparable competitors. On older vehicles there is a risk of line fractures, which can cause complete brake failure. Check thoroughly before buying.
Ford settled for $77M in 2020 (Vargas v. Ford). 2011β2016 Fiesta with DPS6 automatic affected. 37% of Australian Fiestas had at least one clutch replacement.
Door latch spring can fracture and doors may open while driving. US recall affects 2014β2016 Fiesta.
Driver airbag inflator can explode on deployment, projecting metal fragments into occupants. Life-threatening.
Sudden loss of power assist without warning. Heavy steering, especially dangerous at low speed.
Rear springs break through corrosion at the lowest coil, similar to the predecessor. Shock absorbers leak prematurely and ride quality deteriorates.
A defective auxiliary heater relay results in inadequate cabin warming. The heater blows little or no warm air in cold temperatures. Solution: relay replacement per TSI 70/2010.
A/C compressor clutch wears prematurely and seals fail on US Fiesta JA8, causing complete refrigerant loss. Often contaminates the entire A/C circuit with metal debris. Mostly 2011β2016 models.
SYNC APIM module on US Fiesta JA8 is prone to total failure β black screen, freeze, and reboot loops. Ford extended APIM warranty with goodwill program 12M02 to 5 years.
Window regulator mechanisms fail and the glass refuses to move or sticks. Steering column stalk (indicators/wipers) responds unreliably or fails completely.
Worn driveshafts create vibrations when accelerating and cornering. Common on vehicles over 100,000 km. Driveshaft bearings and CV boots wear prematurely.
