Ford F-150 11th Gen
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The 11th-generation F-150 (2004–2008) is considered the worst F-150 era for a used purchase — the culprit is the 5.4L 3V Triton. Two-piece spark plugs weld themselves into the aluminium head — extraction costs $2,000+ per side. Cam phasers wear from 50,000–80,000 miles ($1,500–4,000 to fix).
The 4.6L V8 is the right pick — simpler valvetrain, no cam-phaser grief. Avoid 2004–2006 cars (2004 holds the NHTSA complaint record).
2026 market: 2007–2008 with the 4.6L under 100,000 miles: $10,000–$14,000.
Generations
Engine Overview
The Ford F-150 11th Gen is available with 2 engine variants — from 234 to 305 hp.
Older V8 with single overhead cams and strong, gutsy low-end torque. Robust basic design, but thirsty and with the familiar issues around ignition coils and spark plugs — the latter can seize on removal. With clean oil and occasional attention to the ignition system it runs a very long time. Characterful, full V8 sound, more relaxed than free-revving.
- !! Plastic intake manifold coolant crossover crack from 160,000 km
The plastic intake manifold on early 2V Triton engines goes brittle at the front coolant crossover and cracks. This causes gradual coolant loss and overheating risk, especially at idle. Ford later switched to a revised manifold with an aluminum crossover.
Symptoms: Sweet coolant smell, dropping coolant level with no visible puddle, overheating at idle, white steam at the front of the engine. - !! Spark Plug Ejection from 160,000 km
Same issue as the 5.4L — spark plugs break or get ejected.
Symptoms: Sudden power loss, loud pop - !! Plastic timing chain guides crumble from 240,000 km
The 4.6 2V uses very long timing chains running on plastic guides and tensioner arms that go brittle from heat and oil and break. On cold start oil pressure lags briefly, so the chain slaps and rattles. A broken guide lets the chain jump cam timing.
Symptoms: One-to-two second rattle on cold start, later constant rattle, rough idle, fault code P0300.
+ 2 more engine weaknesses + vehicle weaknesses
5.4L Triton V8 with 3-valve tech — Ford's bread-and-butter truck engine of the 2000s. Notorious for three things: cam phaser tick (hydraulic phasers fail at low oil pressure), spark plugs that break inside the cylinder head on removal (Ford's 2-piece design), and timing chains that stretch past 100k miles. All fixable, but expensive.
- !! Cam Phaser Tick — THE Triton Problem from 130,000 km
Hydraulic phasers lose function at low oil pressure. Rattle/tick on cold start, rough idle, RPM surge. Plastic chain guides break. Repair requires complete front teardown.
Symptoms: Rattle/tick on cold start and idle, CEL P0340-P0349 - !! Timing Chain Stretch — Diesel-Like Cold Start Rattle from 150,000 km
Timing chain stretches past 100k miles. Diesel-like rattle on cold start.
Symptoms: Diesel-like rattle cold, CEL P0016/P0340 - !! Ford 2-Piece Spark Plug Design — Electrode Breaks Off in Head from 160,000 km
Ford's 2-piece spark plug design: electrode extension breaks off and stays in cylinder head. TSB 08-7-6 with special tool. Almost guaranteed after 100k miles.
Symptoms: Misfire, power loss, spark plug breaks during service
