Fun Factor? Decent

Decent SUV

180 hp diesel in the Edge: adequate for the big SUV. No driving fun, but capable.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Continental Injector Coating Defect (2019)

Continental injectors with a faulty internal coating (vehicles built Feb–Sep 2019). The coating delaminates and blocks the injector. Ford service action: free injector replacement (Ford TSB-20-2335). Affected vehicles: Transit, Ranger, Focus, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy, Edge.

Symptoms: Hesitation, poor idle, power reduction, increased fuel consumption, limp mode

0–2,000 € from 50,000 km
!! DPF Clogging from Injector Soot Ingestion

Faulty injectors generate excessive soot that prematurely clogs the DPF. On the high-output variant (190 hp), soot also blocks the low-pressure filter of the dual EGR system. Repair requires simultaneous replacement of injectors AND DPF (TSB-20-2335). Replacing the DPF alone does not resolve the issue long-term.

Symptoms: Fault codes P2002, P02EC, P02FA, check engine light, power reduction

500–2,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Oil Bath Belt Clogs Oil Pump Strainer

The oil bath timing belt disintegrates and clogs the oil pump strainer with debris particles. The engine dies from oil starvation — bearings, crankshaft, camshaft and turbocharger are destroyed.

Symptoms: No prior warning: oil pressure drops, engine runs rough, then total destruction. Belt itself may look intact visually.

1,900–2,300 € from 100,000 km
!! Premature Turbocharger Failure from Oil Starvation

The 2.0 EcoBlue turbocharger can fail before 50,000 km. Cause: belt debris in the oil circuit or overdue oil change intervals clog the oil feed to the turbo bearing.

Symptoms: Whistling on acceleration, noticeable power loss, blue smoke. Turbo warning light may not illuminate.

1,400–2,500 € from 60,000 km
!! EGR-Induced Cylinder Wall Abrasion

A design-inherent uneven distribution of EGR exhaust gases leads to excessive soot ingestion in the middle cylinders. Soot particles cause abrasive wear from piston rings — compression loss and engine replacement required.

Symptoms: Rough idle, increased oil consumption, white or black smoke, high fuel trim correction values stored in ECU.

4,500–6,500 € from 130,000 km
!! NOx Sensor Failure (SCR System)

The NOx sensor in the SCR exhaust aftertreatment system fails prematurely. Fault code P20EE is typical. AdBlue consumption increases measurably as the system reverts to a base map. Sensor replacement is relatively inexpensive.

Symptoms: Check engine light P20EE, increased AdBlue consumption, occasional no-start after many km

200–600 € from 100,000 km
!! Oil Dilution from DPF Regeneration on Short Trips

The 2.0 EcoBlue T8CC dilutes the engine oil with diesel fuel during DPF regeneration cycles when used mainly on short trips. Shorter oil change intervals and Ford-spec oil exclusively are mandatory.

Symptoms: Early oil change warning, oil level rising instead of dropping, engine oil smells of diesel

50–150 € from 30,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Other Recall: LED headlights can fail (2015-2016)

On the Edge II with LED cornering lights produced between December 2015 and March 2016, a software fault in the control module could cause a sudden total failure of both headlights. A software update to the headlight and BCM module fixes the fault.

0–0 €
!! Cooling Oil leak at cam cover gasket

Oil leaks at the cam cover gasket and oil filter housing are reported on the Edge II. Leaking oil dripping onto hot engine components can cause smoke and in extreme cases a fire risk.

200–600 € from 100,000 km
!! Rust Rust on rear door lower edges and underbody

The rear doors of the Edge II have poor sealing at the lower edge due to door mirrors pulled down excessively far. Moisture and road salt attack the door lower edge. The underbody rusts unusually quickly without protection treatment.

300–2,000 € from 60,000 km
! Electronics Adaptive headlight failure

On the Edge II, adaptive matrix headlight control modules fail. Additionally, rear light units can allow water ingress, leading to corrosion on the bulb fittings.

200–1,500 € from 60,000 km
! Electronics Infotainment system freezes, camera fails

The infotainment system in the Edge II tends toward a black screen, freezing, and reversing camera failures. Affected vehicles often require software updates or control unit replacements.

100–1,000 € from 40,000 km
! Electronics Electric tailgate will not open/close

The spindle motor system of the Edge II's powered tailgate fails frequently. The tailgate can be neither opened nor closed via the button or remote control. The menu language can also change randomly with low battery voltage.

300–900 € from 80,000 km
