Fiat Stilo
1.9L JTD with 59 kW (80 hp) in the Fiat Stilo 192 — the entry-level diesel variant. Lowest output in the JTD family, meaning slightly less turbo stress.
Hopelessly Underpowered
59 kW in a compact is real suffering on the motorway. No character, no sound — only for absolute budget buyers.
Engine Weaknesses 4
All JTD Stilo models require timing belt replacement every 120,000 km / 5 years. Cheaply priced 80 hp Stilo models often have unclear service history. Age-related brittleness can cause failure before the mileage threshold.
Symptoms: Sudden engine stop, possible piston-valve contact
Typical JTD problem: the EGR valve sticks due to soot deposits, especially with short-trip driving. The 80 hp Stilo is often used as a second car for urban trips — this increases the EGR load.
Symptoms: Juddering, power loss, engine warning light, increased fuel consumption
Even on the lowest-output JTD, injectors can become leaky after high mileage. Rail pressure build-up fails, making cold starting difficult.
Symptoms: Engine starts poorly after standing, rail pressure below 150 bar, blue cold smoke clouds
Oil mist from the crankcase breather system and turbo charge-air circuit contaminates the hot-film MAF sensor. Inaccurate measurements generate incorrect injection quantities.
Symptoms: Power loss, engine error message, poor throttle pedal response
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Front wishbones wear from around 100,000 km due to rubber bush ageing. Typical symptom: rattling over road irregularities, vehicle follows ruts. Independent workshop: over €400; parts available for around €100.
The leading edge of the sills on the Stilo 192 is extremely susceptible to stone-chip-related rust. Stone chips remove the paint and zinc layer; the spot then reliably rusts despite a galvanised body. Known design problem.
Sporadic ABS/ESP/ASR fault messages that trace back to a defective brake light switch. Fiat internally acknowledged the problem but classified it as non-critical. Replacement part costs around €10, fitting takes 5 minutes.
The slat sliding roof jams and does not close completely, allowing water to enter. The drive motor can fail. Mainly affects older examples with slat sliding roof.
The cable system of the electric window regulator frequently breaks. Workshops incorrectly replace the motor (around €125) when only the cable is broken. Diagnosis requires removing the door trim.
The Stilo's air conditioning loses around 10% of refrigerant per year through micro-porous leaks. After 3 years, up to 140 g of the 540 g charge can have escaped. The AC condenser can also develop leaks.
Rear brakes can work unevenly and fail MOT testing. Brake pads lightly contact the disc. Handbrake shoes can seize with moisture.
The dashboard of the Stilo creaks and squeaks, particularly with temperature fluctuations. The soft-touch coating can become sticky over time. Door check straps creak shortly after purchase.
