– Be Careful
Engine 939A4 – Be Careful 3,090–8,870 €

Opel-based inline four-cylinder with chain drive (no belt!) — low-maintenance, but alternator and exhaust are known weak points.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Petrol Out of Place

140 hp from 1.8 litres is adequate, but the engine struggles with the weight. Diesel alternatives are considerably better suited to the Croma.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! Alternator fails repeatedly

The Bosch alternator on the Croma 2.2 16V is a known weak point: multiple failures within 100,000 km have been documented. A Magneti replacement from the Stilo lasts significantly longer.

Symptoms: Battery warning display, voltage drop in the electrical system, vehicle fails to start

300–500 € from 80,000 km
!! Timing chain rattles on cold start

The timing chain drive on the 939A4 tends to rattle during cold running if oil pressure drops or oil change intervals are extended. A failed chain tensioner can allow the chain to jump.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling after cold start, camshaft sensor fault code P0340

400–900 € from 150,000 km
! High fuel consumption

The 2.2L naturally aspirated engine has a real-world consumption of 10–12 l/100 km. This makes it unattractive for high-mileage drivers, but it is not a technical defect.

Symptoms: Consumption noticeably above manufacturer figures, even at moderate driving style

300–1,500 €
! Exhaust system corrodes early

The exhaust system of the Croma 939A4 shows early corrosion and often needs replacement from as little as 80,000 km. The centre pipe and rear silencer are particularly affected.

Symptoms: Grinding/rattling exhaust noise, visible corrosion on the exhaust system

200–600 € from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Steering Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering Failed

The electro-hydraulic power steering fails at around 70,000 km due to a small seal defect that lets the pump run dry. Cascade failure: replacing individual parts causes recurrence. Full replacement costs around 2,500 Euro.

800–2,500 € from 70,000 km
!! Suspension Broken Suspension Springs

Suspension springs break on front and rear axle, typically from 90,000–115,000 km. Fiat originally only offered complete strut assemblies. Individual springs are available as aftermarket parts (Spidan no. 51804873, around 130 Euro each).

260–620 € from 100,000 km
!! Electronics Alternator (Denso) Repeatedly Fails

The Denso alternator (140A) in the Croma 194 fails from thermal damage to the circuit board. Multiple reports of two failures within 4 years. Deep discharge of the battery overnight is typical.

300–900 € from 60,000 km
! HVAC Heater Blower Fails

The interior blower in the Croma 194 can fail completely even though the climate display shows normal operation. The blower resistor is often the cause.

80–250 €
! Body Tailgate Release Button Failed

The tailgate release button on the tailgate itself fails over time. Opening via remote continues to work, but the button on the tailgate itself no longer responds. Replacement part around 118 Euro as complete assembly.

100–200 €
! Suspension Front Strut Mounts and Tie Rods Worn

In addition to spring failures, tie rod ends and front strut mounts can wear at higher mileages, causing imprecise steering.

150–400 € from 120,000 km
! HVAC AC Condenser Leaking

The AC condenser in the Croma 194 can develop leaks after as little as 5 years. Refrigerant loss causes cooling to fail.

200–500 €
