Fiat Croma
The 1.9L MultiJet 120 hp in the Croma 194 shares all the weaknesses of the 1.9 JTD family, but additionally shows automatic transmission issues from around 100,000 km.
Quiet Touring Sensibility
Refined and quiet for an early common-rail diesel. The Croma is a touring estate — the 1.9 JTD fulfils its purpose, but stays sensible.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Faulty injectors in the Croma 1.9 manifest as jerky cold starts, soot smell, and irregular combustion. Leaking injectors can cause oil dilution through fuel entry.
Symptoms: Jerking on cold start, soot smell, rough idle, oil level rising due to fuel ingress
The 6-speed automatic gearbox shows gear change judder and occasional dropping into neutral on upshift from approximately 105,000 km.
Symptoms: Unexpected shift to neutral on motorway driving, vibrations at 70 km/h
Documented cases on the Croma 194 show timing belt snapping due to a failed tensioner pulley from 150,000 km, resulting in valve damage. The tight engine bay increases labour time and therefore repair costs.
Symptoms: Sudden engine shutdown, loud bang when belt snaps
Heavy soot formation in the 1.9 JTD engine leads to irreversible blocking of the EGR valve and intake tract. Croma owners have replaced the EGR valve multiple times.
Symptoms: Juddering under partial load, black smoke, engine warning light, power loss
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The electro-hydraulic power steering fails at around 70,000 km due to a small seal defect that lets the pump run dry. Cascade failure: replacing individual parts causes recurrence. Full replacement costs around 2,500 Euro.
Suspension springs break on front and rear axle, typically from 90,000–115,000 km. Fiat originally only offered complete strut assemblies. Individual springs are available as aftermarket parts (Spidan no. 51804873, around 130 Euro each).
The Denso alternator (140A) in the Croma 194 fails from thermal damage to the circuit board. Multiple reports of two failures within 4 years. Deep discharge of the battery overnight is typical.
The interior blower in the Croma 194 can fail completely even though the climate display shows normal operation. The blower resistor is often the cause.
The tailgate release button on the tailgate itself fails over time. Opening via remote continues to work, but the button on the tailgate itself no longer responds. Replacement part around 118 Euro as complete assembly.
In addition to spring failures, tie rod ends and front strut mounts can wear at higher mileages, causing imprecise steering.
The AC condenser in the Croma 194 can develop leaks after as little as 5 years. Refrigerant loss causes cooling to fail.
