198A2 1.6L MultiJet 105 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2007–2014
– Be Careful
Engine 198A2 – Be Careful 6,970–17,400 €

The 1.6 MultiJet is technically mature and delivers good mileages if the timing belt is changed on schedule. A production defect with undersized crankshafts affected early Tipo examples from 2016. Blocked DPF and low-rpm hesitation are the most common everyday issues.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Dull Duty

1.6 diesel in the Tipo or 500X: mileage accumulator without emotion. DPF, injector and dual-mass flywheel problems make the already joyless drivetrain a risk.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Production defect crankshaft (model year 2016)

Early Tipo examples from 2016 production had incorrectly short crankshafts fitted. These can lead to complete oil pressure loss and total engine damage. Fiat instructed dealers to completely replace the affected engines.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, oil pressure warning, knocking from engine, sudden engine stop

3,000–6,000 € from 20,000 km
!! Timing belt failure when overdue

The 1.6 MultiJet is a timing belt engine with interference principle. Exceeding the replacement interval of 120,000 km or 6 years risks belt failure with catastrophic engine damage.

Symptoms: Sudden engine stop, engine won't start again, metallic noises when attempting to start

500–800 € from 120,000 km
!! Heat exchanger failure with oil-coolant mixing

Individual vehicles showed early failure (under 20,000 km) of the heat exchanger with oil entering the cooling system. Fiat recognised the problem and replaced the cooler as a goodwill gesture.

Symptoms: Temperature gauge rises rapidly, loss of heating capacity, oil visible in coolant reservoir

400–900 € from 15,000 km
!! EGR valve carbon build-up and power loss

The EGR valve of the 1.6 MultiJet tends to carbon up and delays torque build-up. Typically manifests as poor throttle response up to approximately 2,000 rpm.

Symptoms: Delayed throttle response, engine hesitant to rev, sporadic power loss

200–500 € from 90,000 km
! DPF regeneration causes juddering and power loss

During active DPF regeneration, the engine judders heavily at low revs, especially below 2,000 rpm. This behaviour is often interpreted by drivers as an engine fault.

Symptoms: Heavy juddering below 2,000 rpm, poor throttle response, fuel consumption display drops in steps

300–1,200 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 15

!! Brakes Rear Brake Calipers Seize

Guide pins on the rear brake calipers corrode and seize. When hot the brake pedal doesn't return and the vehicle decelerates unintentionally. Hill Holder faults and burnt discs can result.

150–800 € from 80,000 km
!! Gearbox Premature Clutch Wear

The clutch is one of the most common wear items on the Bravo 198. Grinding noises when engaging indicate urgent attention needed. Full replacement including bearing and shaft seal generates high labour costs.

500–900 € from 100,000 km
!! Suspension Right Driveshaft Breaks on Powerful Engines

On the more powerful engine variants (from around 150 hp), the right driveshaft shows an increased tendency to break. Unusual noises on pull-away are warning signs.

350–550 € from 100,000 km
!! Steering Electric Power Steering Fails on Voltage Drop

The Bravo 198's EPS requires at least 13–13.5V. A weak alternator or old battery causes power steering assist to fail. Problem often occurs after cold weather or short trips.

80–500 € from 90,000 km
! Rust Premature Exhaust System Corrosion

The exhaust system rusts through comparatively early from sulphuric acid and condensation. Parts can fall onto the road and endanger following vehicles.

200–400 € from 90,000 km
! Suspension Premature Shock Absorber and Drop Link Wear

Shock absorbers approach the wear limit at moderate mileages. Drop links wear early, especially aftermarket parts. Clunking and squeaking are typical signs.

200–500 € from 75,000 km
! Suspension Clunking from Rear Axle Area Due to Hardened Silent Blocks

Hardened rear axle rubber bushings cause knocking and clunking that is particularly noticeable in warmer weather and on uneven roads. Fiat developed modified hydraulic silent blocks as a fix.

100–300 € from 60,000 km
! Electronics Faulty Window Regulator Electronics

Electric window regulators stop responding or open on their own. Cause is often a defective relay behind the glovebox or faulty ECU contacts.

100–350 € from 80,000 km
! HVAC AC No Longer Cools Due to Refrigerant Loss

Frequently reported issue on the Bravo 198: AC no longer cools because the pressure sensor cuts the compressor when refrigerant pressure drops too low.

50–400 € from 80,000 km
! Gearbox Poor Gear Engagement When Warm

Especially on the 1.9 Multijet, owners report difficult gear engagement when the gearbox is warm. The 4th to 5th gear transition is most affected.

300–800 € from 80,000 km
! Rust Rust at Doors and Underbody

Older Bravo 198 examples show rust starting at lower door edges and underbody. On vehicles over 7 years old, a thorough underbody inspection is recommended.

300–1,500 € from 100,000 km
! Steering Steering Rack Creaks at Low Steering Speeds

The Bravo 198 steering rack produces creaking noises at low steering speeds, especially when cold. According to parts suppliers, a known model issue; replacement often only temporarily resolves the symptom.

200–700 € from 60,000 km
! Body Door Handles: Paint Chips, Cable Pull Sticks

Paint chips prematurely on all four exterior door handles. The handle cable pull can detach, making it impossible to open the door from outside — typical wear without warning.

30–120 € from 70,000 km
! Interior Seats and Interior Trim Creak

Driver and passenger seats creak when getting in/out and in corners. Door cards and dashboard covers rattle over bumps. Multiple warranty repairs often without lasting success.

0–100 € from 50,000 km
i Electronics Frequent Headlight Defects at MOT

Headlights are among the most frequent MOT defects: incorrect beam angle or blown bulbs.

10–80 € from 60,000 km
