Cupra VZ
EA888 evo top variant with 228–245 kW and up to 400 Nm. Available exclusively with DSG and all-wheel drive. Evolution of the DNUE with improved chain tensioner and optimised oil supply for higher sustained loads. Drift mode enabled by two electronically controlled multi-plate clutches on the rear axle — active torque vectoring.
Comparison Test Winner with Sharp Tuning
The Formentor VZ wins comparison tests against the AMG GLA 35 and T-Roc R — thanks to more agile steering, sharper turn-in and consistent sports tuning. 310 PS with AWD and DSG: a real pleasure on a country road, even if the DSG occasionally hesitates.
Engine Weaknesses 4
The highest EA888 evo power output brings significantly increased thermal load. The intercooler and cooling system work close to their limits. With frequent track use or in hot climates, the risk of overheating rises sharply.
Symptoms: Power drop after several spirited driving stints (heat protection limiting); coolant temperature in the upper range; warning messages during track use
The DNFB with 310–333 PS also inherits the EA888 evo oil pump's structural weakness. At the highest power output, the demand for oil pressure is even more critical — cam phasers and bearings require more pressure.
Symptoms: Rattling and clattering at idle; P0011/P0021 fault codes; rough running when cold
The DQ500 dual-clutch gearbox is pushed to its limits in the 333 under extreme use. Shudder on pull-away and increased clutch wear have been reported on the VZ333 Facelift. Short oil change intervals are mandatory.
Symptoms: Shudder on pull-away from rest; uneven power transfer in 1st/2nd gear; DSG jerk especially when cold
Cases have been documented on the VZ333 where the engine would not start after software updates. The problem affects the engine management ECU and requires a dealer visit.
Symptoms: Engine won't start after OTA update; repeated start attempts required; fault messages on the instrument cluster
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
Plug-in hybrid variants from 2020–2022 were recalled due to fire risk. A defective fuse in the high-voltage system could cause a short circuit and fire. An additional insulating mat and new fuse were installed.
The Formentor's infotainment system freezes daily, crashes multiple times and loses settings. Crashes happen up to several times a day — including on the motorway while driving. Driver assistance systems also drop out when this occurs.
Several owners report water ingress in the boot. Workshops described it as 'within normal tolerances'. After multiple repair attempts the problem remained unresolved on some vehicles. Panoramic roof drains are frequently the cause.
Some Formentor owners report self-induced oil loss with no visible leak. Two oil top-ups within a few months were needed. TÜV data identifies oil loss and failed emissions tests as known weak points.
The TÜV report shows slightly above-average brake disc wear for the Formentor. The Brembo setup on VZ variants squeals in everyday driving and causes high running costs. Expensive to replace.
Reports & Tests
Passes the first main inspection reliably. Weak points are oil leaks and slightly elevated brake disc wear, attributed to the car's sporting character. Lighting, steering, driveshafts and chassis show no notable defects.
Ranks among the more reliable models in the compact class. The entire VAG Group including Cupra shows high to very high reliability in breakdown callout statistics.
Brakes and lighting score very reliably. Chassis springs and exhaust receive good marks. Brake disc wear slightly above average, likely due to spirited use. Isolated oil leaks known.
