Cupra VZ
Revised MEB drivetrain for the Born Facelift 2024. 170 kW standard variant with improved suspension tune; 240 kW in the VZ with dual-motor AWD, 84 kWh battery and 185 kW charging power. Software updates noticeably improve ESP tuning over the predecessor.
Finally: Born VZ with a Real Performance Promise
The Born VZ with 326 hp, AWD and 545 Nm is the first Born that truly earns the Cupra name: 0–100 in 5.5 seconds, 200 km/h top speed, new suspension and 185 kW charging. No more compromise between daily use and sport.
Engine Weaknesses 3
The EDC motor (170 kW Born) shares all known MEB software weaknesses. OTA updates can damage control units. Infotainment crashes and driver assistance failures are frequently documented.
Symptoms: System freezes; navigation won't start; driver assistance off; app connection drops; vehicle won't start after update
The 12V auxiliary battery drains due to continuous parasitic draw from dormant control units or a defective charge management system. Faulty charge management during overnight wallbox charging can drain the battery completely.
Symptoms: Vehicle won't start; red 12V supply warning; all systems dead; recovery needed despite charged HV battery
Heat exchanger failures on the Cupra Born were documented within the first year of operation. The heat exchanger is responsible for conditioning the high-voltage battery — failure threatens range and battery health.
Symptoms: Reduced range; battery thermal management warning; vehicle throttles charging power; workshop cooling system notification
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
The 12V drain issue was reduced in the Born Facelift by an improved software version but not eliminated. New vehicles continue to show discharge scenarios. Improved charge management is available for model year 2024 onwards.
The Born's capacitive door handles reliably fail below 5°C and in wet conditions. Opening and closing via the door handle stops working; the key fob must be used instead. VW is aware of the problem (TPI 2065958/9) and replaces the handles completely in some cases.
The facelift receives new software hardware but continues to share stability issues with the rest of the MEB family. Older Born variants (pre-2024) cannot be updated to the new software base.
The Born FL also suffers from the MEB platform's typical range drop in cold weather. Without the heat pump (extra-cost option), winter range falls sharply. Air conditioning and heating place a heavy load on the battery.
Unchanged in the facelift: the ZF eBKV produces a vague, inconsistent pedal feel when blending between regenerative and hydraulic braking. Software updates since ME 3.0 have not resolved the problem.
