Citroën C4
Revised Stellantis electric motor with 115 kW and 54 kWh battery. More range (up to 420 km WLTP) and faster charging than its predecessor.
Improved ë-C4
156 hp with more range — the improved electric C4 is more practical than its predecessor.
Engine Weaknesses 6
As with the EM-100, the EM-115 (54 kWh variant) has a software calibration weakness in the traction battery control unit. The fault causes incorrect cell voltage readings and can trigger loss of drive while moving. The Stellantis recall also covers the ë-C4 X.
Symptoms: Sudden loss of drive, electric drive system warning light, power cut.
The ë-C4 X with 54 kWh battery and 115 kW motor shows up to 260 km range in the brochure; in reality it is 180–220 km depending on driving style and temperature. All Stellantis EVs are known for inaccurate range estimation (internally called 'Guessometer'). Winter: up to 30% less.
Symptoms: Range display fluctuates significantly, less range than shown, uncertainty at the charger.
The 54 kWh NMC battery in the ë-C4 X degrades at approximately 1–2% per year according to long-term tests. Frequent DC rapid charging (max 50 kW) and operation in extreme temperatures increases the degradation rate. The manufacturer's SoH guarantee (minimum 70% after 8 years) provides a safety net.
Symptoms: Decreasing charge capacity, shorter range, state-of-charge jumps on the display.
The ë-C4 X shares charging architecture with the ë-C4. AC charging faults and charging lockouts caused by faulty software updates have been reported. Infotainment and charging system can temporarily fail after a software update.
Symptoms: AC charging aborts, infotainment freezes, charge progress stops without error message.
In the ë-C4 with EM-115 kW motor, a defect in the on-board charger has been reported where AC charging (wallbox, domestic socket) completely fails while DC rapid charging still works. A software update for the charge controller is required.
Symptoms: No charging at wallbox or Type 2 station, vehicle refuses AC charging, fault message on display. DC rapid charging at CCS continues to work.
In the ë-C4, software updates caused a sudden change in the charging curve where charge power drops sharply after a short time. Citroën acknowledges the fault and offers a software update for the charge controller.
Symptoms: Charging sessions start normally but power drops to a very low level after 10–15 minutes. Typically from around 25–30% state of charge. Updating the charge controller resolves the problem.
Vehicle Weaknesses 4
A recall was issued for the C4 III because rear axle springs can detach and fall off. This presents a significant safety risk for other road users.
Citroën issued a recall for the ë-C4 III because the high-voltage wiring harness presents an elevated fire risk. Affects the electric variant of the C4 III; immediate workshop inspection required.
The infotainment system on the C4 III shows occasional software bugs and dropped connections. Smartphone pairing fails, and the system freezes. Remote functions of the app work unreliably.
Several owners report unexpected suspension noises when going over road irregularities. Over severe potholes the damping can bottom out and transmit unpleasant impacts into the body.
