Citroën Nemo
Fiat diesel in the Citroën Nemo (twin of the Fiat Fiorino). Compact four-cylinder with good torque for the mini-van. Timing chain is maintenance-free.
Mini van
75 hp in the Nemo — pure utility value, no driving fun, but economical and reliable.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Fiat 2.0 MultiJet injectors coke up with poor fuel quality or extended standstill periods. Injector needle tips stick, causing uneven injection. Leaking injectors can cause fuel entry into the oil.
Symptoms: Rough idle, stumbling, increased fuel consumption, white/black smoke.
Turbocharger on the Fiat 2.0 MultiJet frequently fails due to bearing wear, aggravated by excessively long oil change intervals or oil starvation. Defective turbo housing seals allow oil into the intake and exhaust tracts.
Symptoms: Whistling noise, power loss, blue/white exhaust smoke, oil in air filter.
The Jumpy III with Euro 6 emissions system combines DPF and SCR AdBlue injection. Faulty AdBlue pumps and sensors are common, especially in winter. The DPF clogs with short-trip driving. Both systems add to maintenance costs and failure risk.
Symptoms: AdBlue warning, DPF warning, engine warning light, start inhibit after repeated warnings.
Fiat 2.0 MultiJet interference engine with belt drive. Manufacturer recommends replacement every 120,000 km or 5 years. If the belt breaks, valves contact pistons — complete engine damage results. Verify service history when buying.
Symptoms: Sudden engine shutdown, no restart, metallic hammering on belt failure.
The shaft seals in the small turbocharger of the 1.3 MultiJet (Fiat unit, code FHZ) wear out. Oil enters the intercooler and intake tract (oil film visible in the air filter box). DPF clogging from oil contamination is a consequence.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on pull-away or acceleration, oil film in air filter box, increased oil consumption, burning oil smell from exhaust. Power loss at higher revs.
The EGR valve on the 1.3 MultiJet builds up heavy deposits. The intake tract and cylinder head carbon up significantly. The valve is difficult to access and replacement is labour-intensive. Without cleaning, engine power steadily decreases.
Symptoms: Hesitation and shudder at 1,700 rpm under part load, visible oily deposits in the intake tract, code P0401 (EGR flow), increased fuel consumption.
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
In the ADAC elk test the Citroën Nemo tipped over at just 80 km/h because it lacked ESP. PSA only fitted ESP as standard from September 2010 on diesel variants; petrol versions followed later. Vehicles built before 2010 without ESP are significantly at risk of rollover.
On vehicles from 2011 and 2012 faulty fuel lines were recalled due to fire risk from fuel leakage. Repair free of charge at a Citroën dealership.
On Nemo models from 2013 and 2014 the brake servo vacuum pump developed problems that significantly reduced braking performance. A known issue on the PSA platform of this generation.
The sliding door rails on the Nemo offer virtually no protection from dirt and moisture. The lower and rear rails rust through early. With advanced corrosion the sliding door becomes stiff or jams.
On Citroën Nemo vehicles from 2008 to 2010 the gearbox control wiring harness can chafe through, causing shifting problems. Faults in the gearbox control unit or sensors such as the EGR valve also occur.
