Citroën C5 X
Plug-in hybrid with 1.6 THP turbopetrol engine and electric motor. System output 225 hp, pure electric range approximately 50 km. Complex powertrain with higher maintenance demands.
Plug-in saloon
225 hp PHEV in the C5 X — electric commuting, comfortable touring.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The Prince engine family (EP6) is well known for faulty hydraulic chain tensioners. The timing chain stretches prematurely and skips teeth. The result is valve-to-piston contact and frequently total engine destruction.
Symptoms: Rattling noise on cold start, rough idle, sudden power loss, check engine light
The too-narrow oil scraper rings on the EP6 lead to high oil consumption — sometimes 1–4 litres per 1,000 km. Poor oil quality from extended intervals accelerates ring sticking. A known design problem in early production.
Symptoms: Blue smoke, oil warning light, frequent top-ups needed, consumption already below 100,000 km
Faulty battery management software can cause the traction battery to overheat and create a fire risk. Stellantis recalled over 90,000 PHEV vehicles (JQD/JQE). Affects model years 2020–2022.
Symptoms: No driver-visible signs — fire risk occurs during charging without visible warning
The NiMH hybrid battery in the DS5 and 508 HYbrid4 can fail after approximately 150,000 km. Fault code P1B0B indicates an internal voltage drop. A new unit costs over €10,000; a used replacement starts at around €900.
Symptoms: Hybrid drive no longer functions, fault message 'hybrid drive deactivated', vehicle starts only in pure combustion mode, fault code P1B0B
The PHEV drivetrain in the DS5/508 uses the same EP6 THP combustion engine with the known weakness of the hydraulic chain tensioner. Hybrid operation makes no difference to this base engine weakness.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, rattling subsides after warm-up, engine check light, camshaft position fault code
Direct injection without intake valve wash, combined with EGR recirculation, promotes soot deposits on the intake valves. In PHEV use with frequent electric driving, cold start condensation can make the problem worse.
Symptoms: Rough idle, starting difficulties when cold, engine stumbling, power loss
Vehicle Weaknesses 4
Stellantis recalled the C5 X PHEV due to potential fire risk from faulty high-voltage battery cells. Affects plug-in hybrid variants produced between 2022–2023. A battery management software update was applied.
Owners of early C5 X build years report immature electronics: the infotainment system freezes or reboots, and the radio has cold dropouts in the first few minutes of driving. Citroën has not delivered immediate software solutions for all problems.
The 8-speed EAT8 automatic in the C5 X shows slight shift hesitation and jolting during warm-up, especially. On early production vehicles, software bugs led to unlogged gearbox malfunctions. Citroën has partially rolled out software updates.
The C5 X is built for maximum comfort. The progressive suspension system tends towards pronounced body roll in fast corners and significant dive under heavy braking. This gives an uncertain impression dynamically, but is inherent to the design.
