Citroën C5 X
48V mild hybrid variant of the PureTech three-cylinder with revised timing (dry belt from 2023). The electric starter generator assists at pull-away and enables coasting. More economical than the pure combustion version.
Economical everyday engine
100 hp MHEV in the C4 X is adequate; the mild hybrid contribution is barely noticeable — neither positively nor negatively.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Oil-bath timing belt delaminates due to fuel dilution of the oil; stop-start operation of the mild hybrid system adds additional belt stress. Newer Gen 3 engines from 2022 feature a revised design.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light, engine noises, power drop, potential engine damage
Despite the mild hybrid addition, the base EB2-DT engine retains the problematic oil-bathed timing belt unchanged. The belt risk is identical to that of other EB2-DT variants.
Symptoms: No audible warning, oil pressure warning, belt debris visible in oil system, sudden engine shutdown on belt failure
The 48V belt-starter-generator can fail from software faults or bearing problems. When defective the system deactivates the recuperation boost mode; the engine continues to run conventionally.
Symptoms: Loss of boost function, warning display in dashboard, increased fuel consumption
The three-cylinder direct injection engine is prone to fuel entry into the engine oil on short trips; mild hybrid starts increase cylinder wall wetting. Annual oil change regardless of interval is recommended.
Symptoms: Rising oil level fluctuations, fuel smell in oil, elevated oil consumption
The 48V lithium battery in the mild hybrid system can fail due to deep discharge or cell damage. The mild hybrid system deactivates; the vehicle continues running in pure combustion engine mode.
Symptoms: Message 'mild hybrid inactive' or 'e-HDi deactivated', BSG (belt starter generator) no longer spins, increased fuel consumption, warning light
The BSG (belt starter generator) of the 48V mild hybrid can fail mechanically or electrically. The BSG drive belt also shows wear at higher mileages.
Symptoms: Mild hybrid system deactivated, alternator fault, onboard electrical warning, BSG belt squeals or breaks
Vehicle Weaknesses 4
Stellantis recalled the C5 X PHEV due to potential fire risk from faulty high-voltage battery cells. Affects plug-in hybrid variants produced between 2022–2023. A battery management software update was applied.
Owners of early C5 X build years report immature electronics: the infotainment system freezes or reboots, and the radio has cold dropouts in the first few minutes of driving. Citroën has not delivered immediate software solutions for all problems.
The 8-speed EAT8 automatic in the C5 X shows slight shift hesitation and jolting during warm-up, especially. On early production vehicles, software bugs led to unlogged gearbox malfunctions. Citroën has partially rolled out software updates.
The C5 X is built for maximum comfort. The progressive suspension system tends towards pronounced body roll in fast corners and significant dive under heavy braking. This gives an uncertain impression dynamically, but is inherent to the design.
