Chevrolet Traverse
3.6-liter High Feature V6 with direct injection, variable valve timing, and 301 hp. Far more durable than the 2.4 Ecotec of the same generation. But requires strict 5,000-mile oil changes (never trust the oil life monitor) or timing chain stretch starts around 85,000 mi.

The LFX 3.6 replaced the LLT in 2013 with a revised timing chain and cleaner internals. It's not trouble-free โ the Delphi high-pressure fuel pump still fails and water pumps are a known wear item โ but it's a different animal from the 2009โ2012 disaster. A 2015โ2017 Traverse with service records is the sweet spot of the first generation. Three-row family hauler, 5,200 lb tow rating, no surprises if you keep up with fluids.
Engine Weaknesses 1
Early 3.6L LFX suffers premature timing chain stretch when oil change intervals are stretched. GM Special Coverage SC-10287 applies.
Symptoms: Cold start rattle, P0008/P0009 codes, check engine light
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
The 6T70/6T75 6-speed automatic in 2009 Traverse suffers wave plate cracking in the 4-5-6 clutch drum, causing complete loss of 3rd, 5th, and reverse gears. GM extended coverage to 10 years/120,000 miles due to widespread failures.
Electro-hydraulic power steering pumps and racks fail on 2009โ2015 Traverse, sometimes as early as 42,000 miles. Complete loss of assist is a major NHTSA complaint category, especially at low speed.
NHTSA Campaign 14V266000: flexible steel cables connecting front outboard seat belts may fatigue and separate, compromising restraint in a crash. Covers 2009โ2014 Traverse.
NHTSA recall for 2010โ2019 Chevrolet Traverse: side curtain airbags may not be properly secured. Affects airbag function in side impact.
2011 Traverse units show StabiliTrak/TC warning lights and limp mode from weak battery or throttle body buildup. Usually fixed by cleaning or battery replacement.
Support struts fail to hold liftgate open, especially in cold weather. RepairPal: $124โ$141 per strut, some dealers quote $400 each plus labor.
