Good engine, terrible gearbox

The 2.0T itself was the Malibu's last honest moment — 250 hp, genuine shove, and reasonably stout internals. GM then bolted it to the 9T50 nine-speed, which in 2017–2018 cars failed catastrophically under 40k miles from casting debris in the valve body. TCM reflash saves most, full rebuild kills the rest. Premier trim discontinued after 2022. Buy one with a healthy transmission and it's actually decent.
