Engine LFV ✖ Stay Away! 9,570–26,510 $

1.5-liter turbo four with direct injection, 163 hp. The engine that broke the Malibu's back. Low-speed pre-ignition destroys piston crowns before 80,000 miles, intake manifold coolant leaks create air pockets that cause hot spots on the pistons. Plus a throttle body that cuts power on the interstate. Class action lawsuit in three flavors.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Cruze with four doors and no dignity

The engine that broke the Malibu's back. 163 horsepower trying to move a 3,100-pound sedan through an auto stop/start system that flattens its own batteries, a throttle body that cuts power on the interstate, and an LSPI defect that kills pistons before 100k miles. A class-action lawsuit in three flavors. The 2016 model year is the one to run from — 1,500+ complaints, nine recalls. Fleet queen, private nightmare.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! LSPI piston damage (1.5L LFV)

Low-speed pre-ignition destroys piston crowns and ring lands on 1.5 LFV engines, especially cylinders 2 and 3. P0300/P0302/P0303 misfires, rising oil consumption, rough idle, cold-start misfires. GM programs 17019 and N182195660 address calibration and piston replacement. Engine replacement $5,500–$8,000. Often before 80k miles.

Symptoms: Cyl 2/3 misfires, rising oil consumption, rough idle, cold-start hesitation

6,050–8,800 $ from 130,000 km
!! Coolant loss and air pockets at intake manifold (LFV)

Intake manifold gaskets crack — coolant loss, air pockets in the cooling circuit, rough running, stalls, in the worst case piston damage from hot spots at the air pocket location.

Symptoms: Dropping coolant level with no visible leak, rough running, stalls

660–1,980 $ from 100,000 km
!! 'Engine Power Reduced' — throttle/APP sensor class action 2016–2018

2016–2018 Malibu: sudden 'Engine Power Reduced' message and drop to ~20 mph while driving. Electronic throttle or APP sensor defect. Hutchinson v. GM class action (D. Md.). Average at 32k mi.

Symptoms: Sudden power loss, 'Engine Power Reduced' message, drop to crawling speed

170–770 $ from 50,000 km
!! Turbo wastegate actuator weakens (LFV)

The 1.5 LFV wastegate actuator weakens over time, erratic boost, P0299 underboost code. Same pattern as the LYX in the Equinox.

Symptoms: Weak acceleration, jerking under load, P0299 underboost

330–2,200 $ from 90,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 12

!! Electronics 'Shift to Park' defect — class action 2016–2019

2016–2019 Malibu shows 'Shift to Park' warning even when already in P. Car won't shut off, doors won't lock. Cause: silicone contamination on the shifter sensor. Settled class action, $500 pro rata + $375 reimbursement.

330–770 $ from 25,000 km
!! Electronics 'Engine Power Reduced' — APP/throttle class action 2016–2018

2016–2018 Malibu: sudden 'Engine Power Reduced' error and power drop while driving. Electronic throttle or APP sensor defect. Hutchinson v. GM class action. 171 NHTSA complaints on 2018 MY, averaging 15,387 mi.

170–770 $ from 52,000 km
!! Gearbox 9T50 9-speed total failure (2.0T) 2017–2019

The 9T50 9-speed in the 2.0T Malibu fails catastrophically from casting debris in the valve body — under 40k miles. Car gets stuck in 4th/5th gear or won't engage at all. TSB 18-NA-081 with TCM reflash, severe cases need a full rebuild.

0–4,400 $ from 65,000 km
!! Other Recall: Takata airbag (16V-870) 2017–2017

NHTSA 16V-870: Takata airbag inflator may rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin. Affects 2017 MY Malibu. Free replacement.

!! Other Recall: fuel pump detaches (18V-358) 2016–2018

NHTSA 18V-358: fuel pump may detach from the mounting flange, fuel leak and stall. Affects 2016–2018 MY. Free replacement.

!! Other Recall: rear brake caliper piston (18V-576) 2018–2018

NHTSA 18V-576: rear brake caliper piston defect can reduce braking performance. 2018 MY only.

!! Other Recall: ECM software cuts injectors (19V-642) 2017–2019

NHTSA 19V-642: engine control module software error may disable fuel injectors. Affects 1.5T Malibus. Software update.

!! Gearbox 6T40 flare in 9th gen Malibu

The 6T40 in the 1.5T Malibu shows shift shock and flare past 85k miles from valve body wear. Same pattern as in Gen VII and VIII.

440–3,080 $ from 140,000 km
!! HVAC A/C compressor failure (9th gen)

Continuation of the Malibu A/C compressor theme in the 9th generation. Often by 50,000 mi, especially with heavy A/C use.

880–1,540 $ from 80,000 km
! Interior MyLink infotainment freezes (9th gen)

The 8-inch MyLink in the 9th gen continues to freeze, reboot spontaneously, and go black. Same as documented in the 8th gen.

0–990 $ from 80,000 km
! Electronics Stop/start kills both batteries (9th gen)

The 9th gen auto stop/start system destroys main and 12V aux battery. P305F Dual Battery Control Module code. Both batteries must be replaced together plus sensor calibration.

440–770 $ from 90,000 km
! Body Trunk water intrusion

Trunk lid or taillight seals leak. Water in the spare tire well, wet carpet. CarComplaints 2016 MY body category.

110–440 $ from 100,000 km
