Idles with the classic deep crossplane rumble, gets noticeably louder past 4,000 rpm than the front-engine LT1 predecessor. First base Corvette engine with standard dry sump oiling (three scavenge pumps). AFM cylinder deactivation in cruise. Requires 0W-40 dexos R oil, 7.5 quart capacity. With aftermarket ProCharger P-1SC at 5-6 psi, 670+ hp is realistic on the stock bottom end.
655 hp AWD hybrid Corvette — gimmick or genius?
400 lbs heavier than the Stingray yet 0.4 seconds quicker to 60 — the front motor delivers 160 hp of instant torque to the front axle, making it the first AWD Corvette in history. In rain and cold, that matters. Stealth mode at up to 28 mph on the e-motor alone is a party trick with 3 miles of range. Carbon ceramic brakes standard. The trade-off: 408 lbs of extra weight dilutes some of the mid-engine feel.
Engine Weaknesses 6
AFM lifters can fail at high mileage. Ticking, misfires, in worst cases camshaft damage. Less common on LT2 than truck V8s.
Symptoms: Loud ticking at part throttle, misfire on individual cylinders
0.3-0.5 quarts per 300 miles under track conditions. Dry sump keeps oil stable but check before and after every session.
Symptoms: Oil level drops after track days
Direct injection only — intake valves not fuel-washed. Carbon deposits can build over high mileage. Oil catch can recommended as prevention.
Symptoms: Gradual power loss, slightly higher consumption at high mileage
Plastic oil storage reservoir mounted to block can leak at the sealing surface, especially on early production years.
Symptoms: Oil spot under vehicle in engine area
Individual coil packs can fail. Rough idle, power loss. CEL with P0300-P0312. Simple repair.
Symptoms: Rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, check engine light
Typical metallic ticking from high-pressure direct injection — normal on LT2/Gen V engines. TSB 19-NA-218. Not a defect but alarming to new owners.

Vehicle Weaknesses 11
Two recalls: 1) Frunk can open at speed blocking visibility. 2) Interior release can fail in sleep mode. Fix: OTA update for Body Control Module. Primarily MY2020.
NHTSA 22V091000: 22 vehicles (2021-2022) with half-shafts missing 1-2 of 6 ball bearings. Sudden loss of drive possible.
Tremec TR-9080 dual-clutch suffers from rough shifting in early MY. Causes: porous valve body castings, leaking case seals. GM switched to O-ring sealing from 2021. Fluid change at 7,500 miles recommended.
Telematics modules and improperly secured ground points cause parasitic draw. OTA updates worsen it. Recall N242435630 for Serial Data Gateway Module. Battery tender essentially mandatory for C8 owners.
13,464 C8 Corvettes (2024-2025): seatbelt retractor can lock in stowed position. Belt cannot be pulled out. Free replacement.
First filter change at 7,500 miles mandatory, then every 22,500 miles. Dealer cost: $700-1,400. 12 quarts of fluid. Skipping leads to shift problems and potential transmission damage.
Recurring black screens with audio still playing. Causes: weak 12V battery, software errors, outdated firmware. Fix: hold steering wheel phone button 30 sec. Permanent fix: CTEK trickle charger, software update.
Perennial Corvette issue: waterborne base coat with visible orange peel texture. Clear coat is hard but thin — wet sanding risky due to low film thickness. GM invested $435M in paint shop upgrades, results still vary.
A/C condensers sit unprotected behind front grilles. Stone chips damage fins sometimes within the first 1,000 miles. Aftermarket protective screens are a popular accessory.
Optional hydraulic front lift shows warning messages. Most common cause: leaking reservoir cap with vent hole (TSB N202321570). Fix: new cap without vent (GM 85165040).
J55 performance brakes use copper-free low-metallic pads (California regulation). Squealing at parking lot speed is by design. TSB PIC6429. Permatex copper anti-seize on pad backing as fix.
