3.6L V6, the most refined GM High Feature V6. Revised timing chain over the LFX, later chain stretch onset (120k+ mi with proper oil changes). GDI-only means carbon buildup on intake valves. AFM deactivates cylinders 3 and 6; lifter collapse can destroy the camshaft. AFM disabler ($200) is cheap insurance. 308 hp moves the Colorado well.
3.6 V6 — the Colorado sweet spot
308 hp, naturally aspirated, pairs with the 8L45 8-speed. No turbo lag, no diesel emissions headaches, enough power for a loaded bed and moderate towing. The 8L45 can shudder — a fluid flush (TSB 18-NA-355) fixes most cases. Carbon buildup on intake valves is the long-term concern. The volume engine for a reason.
Engine Weaknesses 3
AFM deactivates cylinders 3 and 6 under light load. Stuck lifters grind cam lobes flat, sending metal debris through the engine within 2,000 mi. Requires head removal, lifter/tray/camshaft replacement. AFM disabler ($200) may prevent occurrence.
Symptoms: Loud valvetrain tick at idle, misfire on cyl 3 or 6, oil consumption 1 qt/1,000 mi
The LGZ is the most reliable 3.6 iteration — chain failures push past 120k mi with 5,000-mi oil changes (vs 60-90k on LLT/LFX). Still requires primary and secondary chain replacement. 12-16 hours labor.
Symptoms: Cold start rattle 1-3 sec, P0008/P0009/P0016-P0019 codes
GDI without port injection allows carbon to accumulate on intake valves. Compression can drop 20-40 psi. Walnut shell blasting every 80-100k mi is the fix.
Symptoms: Extended cold cranking, rough idle, misfires at cold temps
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
Corroded connectors in the power steering system cause sudden assist loss. NHTSA recall 16V054 covered 2015 models (60,678 vehicles). 2016-2018 similar, covered by TSB 16-NA-065.
Torque converter clutch material contaminates fluid, causing shudder at light throttle. GM TSB 18-NA-355 calls for fluid flush. Class action filed covering 800k+ units.
Transfer case actuator motor, wiring chafing, or control module prevent 4WD engagement. Service 4WD message common in cold weather. Check actuator wiring at frame crossmember first.
Leaf spring packs develop metal-to-metal contact as dampers wear. GM TSB addresses it with updated damper inserts.
Thin rear frame section allows visible bed movement at highway speed. At max GVWR the frame visibly flexes.
A/C compressor clutch or high-pressure switch fails. BCM temp sensor wiring can prevent compressor engagement.
MyLink system suffers software glitches: black screens, frozen displays, Bluetooth failures. Reset by holding Home + Fast Forward for 10 seconds.
