6.2-liter V8, same bottom end as the LS3 — but with Active Fuel Management. 400 hp instead of 426, the deficit feeds the AFM compromise. The real issue: AFM lifter bearings starve, rattle over cam lobes, send metal through the engine. TSB 10-06-01-007D. Synthetic oil, 5k-mile max. AFM delete (~$2,500) is the permanent fix. If the LS3 manual is available, skip the L99.

Fun Factor? Decent

400 hp V8 auto — AFM is the slow poison

Same engine as LS3, minus 26 hp, plus cylinder deactivation that can kill the motor past 50k miles. Fine for cruising, irrelevant on track. Budget for an AFM delete — or just get the LS3 manual.

Total repair costs: 6,930–21,120 $ 9 weaknesses

Engine Weaknesses 2

!! AFM Lifter Collapse

AFM lifter bearings starve during cylinder deactivation, seize, rattle over cam lobes. TSB 10-06-01-007D. AFM delete (~$2,500) is the permanent fix.

Symptoms: Loud CLACK-CLACK from cylinder head, check engine, reduced power

2,200–5,500 $ from 80,000 km
!! Camshaft Damage from AFM Lifter Failure

Collapsed lifter hammers camshaft and damages lobes. Half an engine build required.

Symptoms: Progressive clattering, misfires, metal in oil

3,300–6,600 $ from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Body Visibility: like driving a submarine

Consumer Reports rated the Camaro worst sporty car for visibility. Tiny rear window, massive blind spots. 'I throw up a prayer for every lane change' — owner quote.

!! Suspension Driveline Vibration

Torque tube and driveshaft create noticeable vibrations at certain speeds. Balance and bearing check needed.

220–1,320 $ from 60,000 km
!! Gearbox 6L80 Transmission Shudder

The 6L80 6-speed auto shows torque converter shudder. Fluid change often helps, worst case converter replacement.

330–4,400 $ from 80,000 km
!! Steering Steering Rack Play at Highway Speed

Steering rack develops play — vague center feel at higher speeds.

550–1,650 $ from 80,000 km
! Interior Interior: cheap plastics and rattles

Hard plastics everywhere, dashboard creaks, loose trim panels. Disappointing build quality for the price.

110–550 $ from 50,000 km
! Gearbox Rear Axle Pinion Seal Leak

Pinion seal on the rear diff leaks. Diff fluid visible on inside of rear wheel.

220–550 $ from 60,000 km
! Electronics Infotainment Freezes

MyLink system freezes or shows black screen. Restart by holding volume knob.

0–550 $ from 40,000 km
