Buick Encore
1.4-liter turbo four with direct injection, 155 hp. Successor to the LUV with revised pistons and DI. The worst LUV issues are behind it. Still vulnerable to cooling system problems past 100,000 miles, but much more durable.
Revised engine, less drama
The LE2 is noticeably better than the LUV. Fewer PCV issues, more power. A reasonable choice for the final model years.
Engine Weaknesses 3
The LE2 turbocharger lasts far longer than the LUV but shows wear past 100,000 miles. Rebuildable, replacement $1,500โ$3,000.
Symptoms: Whistling from turbo, power loss under load, blue smoke
The LE2 shows seeping coolant consumption past 100,000 miles through thermostat housing, hoses, and head gasket.
Symptoms: Reservoir level drops, no visible leak, possible overheating
Past 80,000 miles, LE2 engines show oil consumption from hardened valve stem seals and piston ring wear.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, oil level drops
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
The 6T40 automatic exhibits harsh downshifts, shuddering, and gear slippage. Individual solenoids cannot be replaced โ entire control module replacement required.
A/C compressor fails on early model years. Average repair around $900.
Parasitic current draw drains the battery. OnStar module and infotainment identified as common causes.
Canister purge valve sticks open. TSB 23-NA-119 documents the issue. Causes hard starts and engine stumble.
Clearcoat peels especially on hood and roof. Cosmetic issue without a shop fix.
