BMW-Gen5-Single Elektromotor Gen5 286 hp Automatic All-wheel drive SUV 2020–2022
– Be Careful
Engine BMW-Gen5-Single – Be Careful 900–7,900 €

Fifth generation of the BMW electric drivetrain with a single motor. High efficiency through an electrically excited synchronous motor without rare-earth magnets. Watch the 12V battery and control unit software.

Fun Factor? Decent

Electric everyday

Solid electric drivetrain — comfortable and efficient, but not exciting.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Faulty switching valve in cooling circuit (Vitesco)

A Vitesco switching valve (64119462114) in the cooling circuit fails, especially in frost. Coolant runs out before the warning light activates. BMW temporarily imposed a global delivery stop on new i4s.

Symptoms: Coolant puddle under the car; heater fails before warning light illuminates; coolant level warning appears too late.

300–1,800 € from 30,000 km
!! Recall: software algorithm shuts down high-voltage system

A software bug in the HV system monitoring triggers a preventive drivetrain shutdown even when no actual hazard exists. Vehicle loses drive within 15–20 seconds. BMW recalled 70,852 vehicles (i4/iX/i5/i7, MY 2022–2025).

Symptoms: Warning 'High-voltage system fault' followed by loss of drive; steering and brake assist remain active; car coasts slowly to a stop.

!! Recall: manufacturing defect in HV battery cells (fire risk)

HV battery cell modules were not manufactured to specification. Module frame can crack, shut down the high-voltage system, or cells can overheat to fire risk. Affected: i4, iX, i7 (production 07.2021–02.2024).

Symptoms: Loss of drive while moving; HV battery warning; in rare cases smoke or fire.

!! Heat exchanger valve leaking

Production issue on Gen5 electric vehicles. Heat exchanger valve leaks; car can be in the workshop for weeks. BMW replaces under warranty.

Symptoms: Coolant loss, thermal management fault, reduced charging performance

500–3,000 € from 30,000 km
!! Power reduction under thermal load (long distance)

Under sustained full load on the motorway the system throttles drive output to protect against overheating. Documented especially on the i4 eDrive40 and early iX models. Motor and battery temperatures reach 100°C+.

Symptoms: Noticeably reduced acceleration after 30+ minutes of motorway driving; charging performance drops on rapid back-to-back charges; warning 'Drive restricted'.

! Heat pump vibrations in cabin

Heat pump produces loud droning and whirring inside the cabin, especially when heating. BMW issued a software update; problem not fully resolved.

Symptoms: Strong droning/whirring with heating on, vibrations felt

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Other Recall: Battery management system software

A software fault in the BMS can damage control units and the 12V electrical system via overvoltage in a severe crash. Hazard warning lights, indicators and eCall can then fail. Affected production: July 2019 to May 2021. Approximately 2,040 vehicles in Germany.

0–0 €
!! Other Recall: Battery module weld defect

Poor welds on battery terminals caused deviations in voltage and temperature measurement. 1,974 iX3 units were recalled. BMW replaces affected battery modules free of charge.

0–0 €
!! Other Recall: Integrated Brake System (IBS)

Earlier iX3 models without the new integrated brake system are not affected by this recall. Later G08 build dates (production from June 2022 onwards) fall under it. BMW replaces the IBS module free of charge.

0–0 €
!! HVAC Range loss from heating

The iX3 is based on the G01 combustion car platform and early versions lack a heat pump. At outside temperatures below 5°C, real-world range drops well below the WLTP figure of 460 km, often under 300 km.

100–800 €
! Electronics Outdated infotainment and software issues

Pre-production and early build vehicles have an outdated iDrive system that freezes and struggles with OTA updates. The 2022 facelift brought the newer iDrive 8.
