BMW xDrive30
Twin-motor variant of the Gen5 drivetrain with AWD and enormous system output. Up to 660 hp in the M70 version. The high-voltage system and cooling circuit are complex to service.
Dual-motor electric
Capable dual-motor β quick and quiet, typical EV feel.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The high-voltage combined charging unit (CCU) was incorrectly installed in a production batch. A loose component interrupts current flow and can shut down drive while driving. Affected: iX xDrive50, iX M60, i4 M50 (JuneβSeptember 2022).
Symptoms: Sudden loss of drive while moving; intermittent high-voltage fault messages; vehicle won't restart after shutting down.
Manufacturing defect in HV battery cell modules (production 07.2021β02.2024). Frame structure can crack, shut down the high-voltage system, or cells can overheat to the point of fire risk. Affected: i4 M50, iX M60, i7 M70.
Symptoms: Sudden loss of drive; HV battery warning; in extreme cases smoke or fire at the battery.
Same production issue as Gen5 Single. Heat exchanger valve leaks coolant. BMW replaces under warranty, but lengthy workshop visits.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, fault message, reduced charging performance
Vibrations between 70 and 110 km/h when accelerating and during regenerative braking. BMW carries out a service measure (disassemble front axle, replace bolts). Problem often only reduced, not fully resolved.
Symptoms: Shuddering in steering wheel and seat between 70β110 km/h under load; vibrations also during deceleration (regeneration); occurs from around 10,000 km.
Particularly on the i4 M50, vibrations emerge from the front drive unit that intensify at high speeds and under engine braking. Caused by imbalance or bearing tolerance issues in the front EDU.
Symptoms: Droning or vibration from the front motor area above 100 km/h; vibrations increase under regenerative braking; felt through steering wheel and pedals.
Vehicle Weaknesses 13
A signal fault in the motor position sensor of the electric brake actuator can deactivate hydraulic brake assistance. ABS and DSC may fail. Affected: production June 2022 to August 2024 (46,967 vehicles in Germany).
On the BMW iX1, charging at wallboxes and AC charge points aborts after a few kWh. The cause is a faulty CCU (Charging Control Unit). Occurs at various charge points β not an infrastructure issue.
A manufacturing defect at a supplier can cause the driveshaft to detach from the electric drive unit. Affected production: November 2022 to July 2023. Approximately 1,511 vehicles in Germany. BMW replaces driveshafts free of charge.
The iX1 U11 (production from June 2022) is part of the major BMW IBS recall. Faulty brake electronics can deactivate ABS and DSC. BMW replaces the brake system free of charge.
The iDrive system with OS8 and OS9 frequently shows connectivity errors (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto), voice control crashes and delayed profile loading on startup. OS9 requires a hardware replacement of the head unit.
On the iX1 U11, AC charging aborts shortly after starting with a 'charging error' message. The cause is a faulty CCU software module. BMW made a software update available through dealers from December 2023.
The warning message 'Proceed with caution β drivetrain malfunction' puts the car into limp mode. Causes on the U11 include a faulty NOx sensor, damaged wiring harness or EGR valve issues.
Some iX1 units charge at wallboxes with significantly reduced power or terminate the charging session after a short time. In one documented case, 48 kWh were drawn from the wallbox but the battery only gained 32% charge. A defective CCU is frequently the cause.
In cold temperatures, range drops noticeably due to heating and battery conditioning. The iX1 has a heat pump that mitigates but does not eliminate the loss.
On both combustion and hybrid variants, a loud creaking or squealing occurs when coasting and braking lightly. BMW describes this as a stick-slip effect and has not yet found a permanent fix. iX1 variants are particularly affected due to infrequent brake use.
At motorway speeds above 120 km/h or on uneven roads, creaking and rattling occurs around the driver's door and B-pillar. BMW has a fix: adhesive tape strips on A- to C-pillars and anti-creak spray.
The X1 U11's automatic climate control is not a true full-auto system β air vents and blower level often need to be adjusted manually. In heating mode, vents appear to block with no airflow.
The iDrive system shows intermittent connectivity drops with CarPlay and Android Auto. Smartphones in the charging tray are caught in a reconnection loop. BMW software updates improve the situation.
