DAZA 2.5L TFSI I5 400 hp Automatic All-wheel drive CoupΓ© 2016–2018
– Be Careful
Engine DAZA – Be Careful 27,980–91,300 €

The DAZA replaced the CEPA in 2017: first 2.5 TFSI with an aluminium block instead of cast iron β€” 26 kg less at the front axle, noticeably improving handling dynamics. Dual injection (direct + port) reduces valve carbon build-up; electronic wastegate for better throttle response. 400 PS from the same displacement. Five-cylinder sound without OPF: full, pressured from 1,800 rpm. Weak point in the tuning world: conrods fail under extreme torque (E85, >600 WTQ). DQ500 gearbox service and Haldex oil change are mandatory and often neglected.

Fun Factor? Legendary!

TT RS 8S β€” the purest five-cylinder compact

The TT RS 8S CoupΓ© is the purest form of the DAZA: stiffer than the 8J, lighter than the RS3. The aluminium block makes itself felt twice over in the CoupΓ©. No OPF, direct five-cylinder sound. Impressively stable under launch control. The definitive compact sports car of its generation.

Engine Weaknesses 14

!! Gudgeon Pin Seizure β€” Con Rod Without Bronze Bush

DAZA/DNWC con rods have no bronze bush in the small end β€” steel-on-steel contact. When tuned beyond ~490 hp the oil film breaks down; the gudgeon pin seizes.

Symptoms: Metallic knocking from the engine block, initially load-dependent. Power loss, oil pressure warning. Without immediate shutdown: total engine damage.

8,000–20,000 €
!! Timing Chain Elongation β€” Tensioner Failure

Timing chain elongates prematurely; chain tensioners extend far out. VCDS camshaft adaptation beyond -7Β° to -10Β° is critical. At 10Β°, valves contact pistons. Longlife oil and infrequent changes accelerate wear.

Symptoms: Rattling from the centre of the engine on cold start (first 20–60 sec), disappears when warm. Over time also audible with warm engine. VCDS shows negative camshaft adaptation.

3,000–6,000 € from 90,000 km
!! Water pump housing cracks β€” coolant loss

The plastic water pump housing cracks from thermal cycling. Coolant escapes on the driver's side. Known issue with TPI documentation.

Symptoms: Coolant puddle on driver's side after parking, dropping coolant level, coolant smell after the drive.

500–1,300 € from 60,000 km
!! Turbocharger Bearing Damage β€” Total Failure

Bearing damage from insufficient oil supply (short trips, cold start under load). Secondary damage: piston melt from exhaust back-pressure, intercooler contamination with oil mist.

Symptoms: Whistling noise under higher load, black smoke, heavy oil consumption, engine throttling (limp mode).

2,500–12,000 € from 120,000 km
!! High-pressure pump leaking β€” fuel in engine oil

The high-pressure pump sits on the camshaft cover. When the seal fails, fuel enters the engine oil β€” oil level rises, lubricating properties decrease, bearing damage is likely.

Symptoms: Strong fuel smell at the oil filler cap, rising oil level on dipstick despite no top-up, fuel smell in the cabin.

800–2,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Stuck Injector β€” Piston Melt

Injector sticks open β€” uncontrolled fuel entry causes localised combustion at the piston rim. Piston melts through, total engine loss.

Symptoms: Misfires on individual cylinders, power loss, check engine light. In extreme cases sudden engine shutdown.

8,000–22,000 € from 100,000 km
!! DQ500 mechatronics / clutch pack worn

The DQ500 mechatronics unit is the most common failure point. The standard clutch slips above ~650 Nm. Gearbox oil change from 60,000 km recommended. Early DQ500 units had failure-prone three-piece synchro rings.

Symptoms: Juddering on take-off or 2β†’3 gear change, jolt during brisk acceleration, clutch slip when cold. In extreme cases gearbox failure.

2,000–10,000 € from 80,000 km
!! Haldex Pump Blocked by Clogged Screen

Haldex Gen 5 has only a mesh screen rather than a filter; clutch debris clogs the screen. Pump seizure causes complete all-wheel-drive failure. Not in the maintenance schedule; preventive cleaning every 40,000 km recommended.

Symptoms: AWD warning light, ESP error message, noticeable traction loss at the rear axle in wet conditions or fast cornering.

400–1,200 € from 60,000 km
!! Crankcase Ventilation β€” Oil in Intake Tract

PCV outlet sits next to the diverter valve. When open, oil mist is drawn in and condenses in the air filter housing. Accelerates intake valve coking on CEPA/CZGB.

Symptoms: Oil residue in air filter housing and on the air filter, occasional oil mist from intake tract at full load.

200–600 € from 40,000 km
!! In-tank fuel pump β€” misfires at full throttle

The in-tank low-pressure pump fails to build sufficient pre-pressure under high load. Fuel pressure collapses, causing misfires at full throttle above 5,000 rpm.

Symptoms: Misfires and hesitation at 5,000–7,000 rpm under full throttle. Lambda climbs to 1.2–1.4 (lean). Disappears under part throttle.

600–1,800 € from 80,000 km
!! Cooling circuit solenoid valve β€” temperature fluctuations

The solenoid valve between the large and small cooling circuits sticks slightly open β€” engine temperature fluctuates between 70–90Β°C. No fault code stored because the valve is electrically intact.

Symptoms: Engine temperature does not stabilise at 90Β°C, fluctuates, long warm-up even in summer. No fault code.

80–300 € from 70,000 km
! Wastegate Rattle β€” Inherent Design Characteristic

Wastegate flap rattles at partial load and cold start from play in the bearing. Audi classifies this as 'state of the art' (TPI 2051734/3). No engine damage, but annoying.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start (approx. 20 sec), especially in Comfort mode. Disappears in Sport mode. With increasing mileage also audible when warm.

0–2,500 € from 20,000 km
! Spark Plugs / Ignition Coils β€” Shortened Service Life

Change spark plugs in the five-cylinder every 20,000–30,000 km (not longlife!). Wrong plugs cause ignition coil failures. The connector plastic breaks when pulled off carelessly.

Symptoms: Misfires at low temperatures, rough idle, slight power reduction, P0300–P0305 fault codes.

150–400 € from 30,000 km
! Exhaust Flap Rattle in Rear Silencer

Exhaust flaps in the rear silencer rattle on cold start and at partial load. Audi has an updated exhaust system (TPI 2048256/3). Unlike the wastegate issue, this is repairable.

Symptoms: Tinny rattling from exhaust system on cold start (30–60 sec), pronounced per driving mode (louder in Comfort). More pronounced at low temperatures.

Vehicle Weaknesses 4

!! Gearbox S Tronic Mechatronics Failure

The S tronic mechatronics unit can develop faults that manifest as shift problems. Repair costs vary greatly depending on the extent of the damage.

450–5,000 € from 100,000 km
! Suspension Magnetic Ride Suspension: Clunking Noises

The optional Magnetic Ride suspension produces irritating clunking noises that, according to reports, the manufacturer has yet to resolve.

800–2,500 €
! Interior Leather Seats: Creaking Seat Frames

The high-quality leather seats tend to produce unpleasant creaking noises. New seat frames are the solution but are usually only worth replacing under warranty.

300–1,200 €
! Electronics Virtual Cockpit: Software Crashes and Failure

The Virtual Cockpit is prone to software faults and failures. Wiring connections can work loose due to vehicle vibrations over time.

200–1,500 €
