Audi Q7

CREC 3.0L TDI V6 249 hp Automatic All-wheel drive 2015–2019
βœ– Stay Away!
Engine CREC βœ– Stay Away! 10,000–54,200 €

V6 diesel with 183 kW in the Q7 4M. Best-selling engine option with optimal balance of performance and consumption. Significantly lighter than the predecessor 4L.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Anxiety engine β€” costly failure looming

249 hp 3.0L with a known problem: low oil pressure from variable oil pump and fuel dilution. The risk of expensive repairs overshadows any driving pleasure.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Low Oil Pressure from Variable Pump and Fuel Ingress

The CREC (EA897evo) uses a variable oil pump for Euro 6 compliance that delivers too little pressure at low rpm. Combined with fuel ingress from leaking injectors, oil dilution can cause engine damage.

Symptoms: Oil pressure warning, engine noise, emergency shutdown, unusually rapidly dropping oil level, fuel smell in oil

3,000–15,000 € from 80,000 km
!! Camshaft Fracture (Material Defect EA897)

The 3.0 TDI (CRT/CREC group) has a known material defect on the camshafts. Affected models 2014–2017. A broken camshaft inevitably causes total engine failure. Costs: up to €20,000.

Symptoms: Ticking or knocking clearly exceeding normal diesel combustion noise, especially on cold start; sudden engine failure

3,500–20,000 € from 100,000 km
!! DPF Problems from Frequent Regeneration and Fuel Ingress

Frequent DPF regeneration cycles on the CREC (especially short trips) cause fuel ingress into the engine oil. This dilutes the oil and dramatically increases the risk of engine damage from low oil pressure.

Symptoms: Frequent DPF regeneration messages, fuel smell in engine oil, rapidly dropping oil level, oil pressure warning

500–2,500 € from 70,000 km
! EGR System Recall (Thermal Window)

Audi carried out a recall for Q7 model years 2010–2017 due to an illegal thermal window shutoff in the EGR system. After the software update the EGR valve may wear faster.

Symptoms: Recall notification, possibly power loss or increased consumption during the break-in period after update

0–500 € from 60,000 km
! Jerky Automatic Transmission (8-Speed Tiptronic)

In the Q7 4M with 8-speed automatic, shift jerk and illogical shift behaviour are known complaints. Software updates can help; mechanical repair is expensive.

Symptoms: Jerk when pulling away, harsh shift impacts, illogical shifts at low rpm, transmission fault codes

200–3,000 € from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Suspension Air Suspension Compressor and Air Bags Failed

Standard air suspension shows frequent compressor and air bag failures from 80,000–120,000 km. Leaking bags make the compressor run continuously until it burns out.

800–3,500 € from 90,000 km
!! Other AdBlue System Failure (SCR Injection)

AdBlue system on 3.0 TDI models shows frequent faults from around 60,000 km: clogged injectors from urea crystallisation, faulty dosing pump. Repair costs up to 4,000 €.

600–4,000 € from 70,000 km
!! Brakes Premature Brake Wear Due to Vehicle Weight

Kerb weight above 2,000 kg leads to significantly elevated brake wear. Front brake discs and pads may need replacing as early as 30,000–50,000 km.

700–2,500 € from 40,000 km
! Electronics MMI Touch/MIB2 System Crashes

MIB2 infotainment system tends to crash and complete failure from electrical faults or moisture ingress. MOST ring network fails completely when one component drops out.

400–2,000 € from 80,000 km
! Electronics Electric Tow Bar Control Unit Fault

Electrically extending tow bar shows frequent control unit faults (EEPROM, Hall sensor). Without correct coding, ACC and front camera fail.

300–1,200 € from 60,000 km
