Audi SQ5

DTPA 3.0L TDI V6 347 hp Automatic All-wheel drive 2020–2024
– Be Careful
Engine DTPA – Be Careful 17,450–59,000 €

EA897 evo (3rd generation 3.0 TDI), fitted from 2016 in A4 B9, A6 C8 and Q5 FY. The fully electronically controlled oil pump deliberately reduces pressure at idle β€” a design feature that can become a liability with age. Camshaft failures and low oil pressure are known major damage patterns.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Petrol replaces diesel β€” faster, but diesel fans are mourning

354 hp TFSI instead of BiTurbo TDI. Quicker in a sprint, but the brutal diesel torque is gone. Consumption notably higher, range shorter, character more generic. Competitive against Macan S and X3 M40i on paper, but the SQ5 community misses the diesel.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Low oil pressure from variable oil pump

The ECU-controlled oil pump reduces pressure at idle to approx. 1.0–1.4 bar. At high motorway oil temperatures with bearing wear, this pressure is insufficient β€” con-rod bearings seize from 150,000 km.

Symptoms: Oil pressure warning at idle or on country roads, knocking noises, in severe cases engine failure

8,000–20,000 € from 150,000 km
!! Camshaft breakage (material defect)

All 272-hp variants built before January 2017 contained faulty camshafts. Tooth flank noise and fractures are possible; Audi acknowledges the problem, goodwill depends on mileage.

Symptoms: Clattering or ticking from camshafts even after brief warm-up, rough running, in severe cases sudden engine stall

3,500–20,000 € from 80,000 km
!! Timing chain drive worn (4-chain system)

The EA897 uses four timing chains β€” one per cylinder bank, one connecting chain and one for the oil pump. All chains, tensioners and guides must be renewed together.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, metallic knock on throttle, engine light with camshaft faults

2,500–5,000 € from 160,000 km
!! Injector failure / fuel ingress into oil

Injector failures with oil dilution from fuel ingress. Less common on EA897 evo than predecessors, but costly to repair: replacing multiple injectors can cost €4,000.

Symptoms: Rough engine, rising oil level (fuel ingress), heavy soot production, increased consumption

1,500–4,000 € from 130,000 km
!! DPF clogging from short-trip use

The 3.0 TDI in the SQ5/S4 B9 needs sufficiently long runs for DPF regeneration. Predominantly short-trip use accumulates ash in the filter. Above 45 g load, ceramic melting is at risk.

Symptoms: Engine warning light 'particulate filter system fault', noticeable power reduction (limp mode), increased fuel consumption. DPF regeneration runs more frequently and for longer.

1,500–4,000 € from 120,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Other Control Arm Stress Corrosion Cracking (Recall)

KBA recall: stress corrosion cracking can cause elevated play between the control arm and wheel carrier. Affects build years 2019–2021. Free replacement at dealer.

0–0 €
!! Other Brake Master Cylinder Failure (Recall)

Recall for Q5 FY (production July 2018 to March 2019): faulty brake master cylinders increase stopping distance. Free replacement programme through Audi.

0–0 €
!! Other Haldex Differential Oil Contamination

The Haldex rear differential suffers from oil contamination by clutch debris when maintenance is neglected. A differential oil change clears the symptoms. Neglect risks differential damage.

100–3,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Brakes Brake Calliper Seizing

Brake callipers seize especially after prolonged standing. Rear axle callipers are most affected. MOT reports list brake defects as a frequent fault.

350–1,500 € from 60,000 km
! Electronics MMI Software Errors and 360-Degree Camera Failure

Early FY models show MMI faults: faulty Google Earth view, Audi Connect dropouts and failure of the 360-degree camera. Audi has issued service actions and firmware updates.
