DTNA 2.0L TDI 204 hp Automatic All-wheel drive 2017–2024
– Be Careful
Engine DTNA – Be Careful 7,650–23,500 €

EA288 Evo with 150 kW and 48V mild hybrid. Most powerful variant of the 2.0 TDI with quattro all-wheel drive. Strong everyday diesel.

Fun Factor? Decent

Practical everyday SUV drive

204 hp 2.0L for everyday use β€” solid overall package without sporting ambitions.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! EGR cooler leak and coolant loss

The EA288 Evo derivative DTNA shares the EGR cooler leak susceptibility common across the entire EA288 engine family. Cracks in the cooler allow coolant into the exhaust tract. Fault code P0401, coolant loss without visible external leak is characteristic.

Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible leak, white smoke from exhaust, dropping coolant level, overheating warning

600–1,000 € from 90,000 km
!! Wet timing belt in oil bath β€” wear

The EA288 Evo DTNA, like its predecessors, uses a wet-running timing belt in an oil bath. With missed or extended oil-change intervals and incorrect oil grades, belt material degrades prematurely. No officially set replacement interval from Audi/VW increases the risk.

Symptoms: Whistling, rubber fibres in engine oil, irregular firing order, engine stutter, ECU faults

500–900 € from 150,000 km
!! Turbo oil supply line β€” carbon deposits

On the EA839 3.0 TFSI, the oil feed line to the turbocharger can become partially blocked by coked oil (Longlife intervals), causing turbo bearing failure.

Symptoms: Whining/whistling from turbo, power loss, blue smoke, metal particles in oil.

2,000–6,000 € from 120,000 km
!! Timing chain and tensioner problems

The EA839 3.0 TFSI (DTNA/CZVC) shows, like its predecessor (EA837), occasional timing chain rattle from weakening tensioner elements, particularly on cold start.

Symptoms: Brief rattle on cold start (1–3 seconds); with advanced wear continuously audible.

2,500–5,000 € from 100,000 km
!! Oil consumption EA288 Evo piston rings

The EA288 Evo with aluminium block sometimes shows higher oil consumption than the standard EA288. Some 200-hp Evo engines need around 1 litre per 5,000 km. Low piston-ring tension for friction reduction contributes. Early diagnosis is important.

Symptoms: Dropping oil level between changes, light blue smoke under load, oil smell from exhaust, elevated consumption from the outset

1,500–4,000 € from 60,000 km
! NOx sensor and mass airflow sensor failure

NOx sensor, DPF differential pressure sensor and mass air flow sensor fail sporadically on the DTNA EA288 Evo. These faults trigger MIL warnings and can activate limp mode without actual mechanical damage. Replacing the faulty sensor solves the problem.

Symptoms: MIL light, engine limp mode, increased consumption, sporadic power drops without further symptoms

100–600 €

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Other Control Arm Stress Corrosion Cracking (Recall)

KBA recall: stress corrosion cracking can cause elevated play between the control arm and wheel carrier. Affects build years 2019–2021. Free replacement at dealer.

0–0 €
!! Other Brake Master Cylinder Failure (Recall)

Recall for Q5 FY (production July 2018 to March 2019): faulty brake master cylinders increase stopping distance. Free replacement programme through Audi.

0–0 €
!! Other Haldex Differential Oil Contamination

The Haldex rear differential suffers from oil contamination by clutch debris when maintenance is neglected. A differential oil change clears the symptoms. Neglect risks differential damage.

100–3,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Brakes Brake Calliper Seizing

Brake callipers seize especially after prolonged standing. Rear axle callipers are most affected. MOT reports list brake defects as a frequent fault.

350–1,500 € from 60,000 km
! Electronics MMI Software Errors and 360-Degree Camera Failure

Early FY models show MMI faults: faulty Google Earth view, Audi Connect dropouts and failure of the 360-degree camera. Audi has issued service actions and firmware updates.
