Audi Q5
3.0-litre TDI V6 with 184 PS — lower output of the EA897. Overall more robust under moderate load; timing chain and camshaft issues are still known for this engine family. Watch injector sealing — fuel entry into engine oil leads to accelerated wear.
Capable everyday SUV drive
250 hp 3.0L for daily use — solid all-round package without sporting ambitions.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The 3.0 TDI V6 uses four timing chains. Under wear, the chain tensioners rattle on cold start; in the worst case the chain jumps with engine damage.
Symptoms: Rattle or clatter on cold start, engine warning light, rough idle
Leaking injectors dilute the engine oil with diesel. Occurs especially on early build years; improved injectors fitted from 2007, but wear remains an issue. Replacing all six injectors costs up to 4,000 €.
Symptoms: Oil smells of diesel, oil level rises, oil change intervals shorten, rough idle
Cross-series material defect in the camshafts of the V6 3.0 TDI. The engine has four camshafts; if one breaks, catastrophic engine failure typically follows.
Symptoms: Sudden power loss, irregular engine running, loud knocking from the valvetrain
The EGR valve becomes coked with soot deposits, especially during frequent short trips. Engine hesitation and power loss result. EGR valve and cooler cleaning or replacement required.
Symptoms: Engine hesitation under load, power loss, elevated emissions, limp mode
The variable turbocharger of the 3.0 TDI shows wear from around 130,000 km. Boost pressure control fails, bearings run dry. Replacement including ancillaries costs 1,500–2,500 €.
Symptoms: Power loss, turbo whine or howl, blue smoke, elevated oil consumption
The DPF clogs when used predominantly for short trips, as regeneration temperature is not reached. Forced regeneration or replacement required.
Symptoms: Exhaust warning light, reduced engine power, frequent regeneration cycles, increased fuel consumption
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
On 3.0 TDI models (03–12/2012) oil mist can damage the brake booster diaphragm, significantly reducing braking performance. Recall required.
On Q5 models from 2011 the panoramic roof glass can spontaneously shatter in severe frost (below -20°C) and send fragments into the interior.
From about six years of age, control arms and coil springs show elevated wear that is flagged at MOT. Heavy bodywork and all-wheel drive accelerate bush wear.
The S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox tends to harsh judder on pull-away and delayed response, especially in urban traffic. Clutch wear from 80,000 km possible.
Bei Fahrzeugen mit über 150.000 km zeigen Antriebswellen erhöhten Verschleiß. Besonders Gelenkwellen-Manschetten reißen und führen zu Fettaustritt und Lagerschaden.
On pre-facelift models (before 2012) the DRL module control units fail. Usually individual segments or entire LED strips are affected.
