โ€“ Be Careful
Engine CLAA โ€“ Be Careful 20,100โ€“69,500 $

V6 diesel with 180 kW. Best-selling engine in the A6 C7. Effortless performance for heavy saloons and estates; excellent long-distance engine.

Fun Factor? Decent

Refined multi-cylinder โ€” relaxed cruising

245 hp 3.0L with a pleasant, refined character. Relaxed long-distance cruiser without sporting ambitions. Factor in the known weak points.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Camshaft fracture โ€” material defect

In the 3.0 TDI CLAA (204 hp) the camshaft can break due to a material defect, causing immediate engine damage. Audi documented the issue in TPI 2043172. Affected production years 2015โ€“2017. Camshafts were sometimes replaced free of charge under goodwill.

Symptoms: Knocking or ticking engine noises beyond normal diesel clatter, sudden engine failure, timing chain fault codes

3,500โ€“20,000 $ from 100,000 km
!! Timing chain elongation

The 3.0 TDI V6 has four timing chains: two per cylinder bank for the camshafts, one connecting chain, and one for the oil pump. Elongation leads to incorrect valve timing and can cause catastrophic engine damage. Replacement requires 15โ€“20 labour hours.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, camshaft fault codes in ECU, rough running, power loss

2,000โ€“4,000 $ from 150,000 km
!! High-pressure pump debris in fuel system

When the high-pressure pump fails, metal debris can contaminate the entire diesel system and damage the injectors. Audi A5/A6 with 3.0 TDI are affected. A full system flush and replacement of pump and injectors is then required, incurring very high costs.

Symptoms: Starting problems, irregular engine running, fuel pressure fault, metallic noise from the engine bay

1,500โ€“12,000 $ from 160,000 km
!! Engine shutdown while driving

On the CLAA 3.0 TDI 204 hp, documented cases exist where the engine shuts down completely without warning while driving โ€” all engine and system functions stop simultaneously. Root cause unresolved; suspected ECU or ground connection problems.

Symptoms: Engine cuts out while driving, total instrument blackout, no restart possible, no fault codes stored

500โ€“2,000 $
!! Timing chain rattles on cold start

On the 3.0 TDI (CLAA/CSUB) chain tensioners momentarily lose tension on a cold engine with low oil pressure. The chain rattles; damage accumulates over time.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling for 1โ€“3 seconds after cold start, disappears afterwards. Becomes persistent if neglected.

2,000โ€“4,500 $ from 150,000 km
!! Injectors wear โ€” rough running

On the 3.0 TDI (CLAA/CSUB) injector needles wear without fouling. The ECU loses precise quantity control and the engine runs rough.

Symptoms: Rough idle, juddering, engine warning light, power loss especially in the lower rpm range.

2,000โ€“6,000 $ from 130,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 9

!! Other Recall: Tow Bar Locking Bolt

On model years 2015โ€“2018, the locking bolt of the tow bar can fracture, potentially causing the trailer to become detached while driving. Free workshop visit required.

0โ€“0 $
!! Gearbox Multitronic CVT Unreliable

The Multitronic CVT gearbox has a notoriously poor reliability record. Improved on the C7, it remains a risk. Total failure possible from 100,000 km; repair is very costly.

2,000โ€“5,000 $ from 100,000 km
!! Other Camshaft Fracture 3.0 TDI (MY 2014โ€“2017)

A material defect can cause the camshafts in the 3.0 TDI to fracture, leading to engine damage. Mainly affects vehicles from model year 2014 to early 2017.

3,500โ€“8,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! Suspension AAS Air Suspension Failure

The optional air suspension (AAS) is prone to failure through porous air bellows and defective compressors. Repair costs of 600โ€“1,800 EUR per corner are possible.

600โ€“1,800 $ from 80,000 km
!! Electronics LED Headlight Control Module Defective

LED headlights fail due to defective control modules or individual LEDs. Repair is often more expensive than replacement, as modules cannot be replaced individually.

800โ€“1,500 $ from 90,000 km
! HVAC Automatic Climate Control Malfunctioning

The automatic climate control shows malfunctions from around 60,000 km: incorrect temperature regulation, blower stage issues or complete failure of individual zones on the three-zone system.

600โ€“1,200 $ from 70,000 km
! Suspension Wheel Bearings Wearing Prematurely

Wheel bearings, particularly at the rear axle, show increased wear at higher mileages. Regularly flagged on vehicles from 80,000 km.

400โ€“800 $ from 85,000 km
! Rust Underbody and Sills Corroding

On the C7, rust occurs primarily on the underbody and sills, sometimes in hard-to-reach areas. On vehicles over 7 years old, the underbody should be thoroughly inspected.

300โ€“1,500 $ from 100,000 km
! Suspension Engine Mounts Prematurely Worn

On V6 and V8 engines, engine mounts often wear from around 50,000 km, causing noticeable vibrations.

400โ€“1,200 $ from 60,000 km
