Audi A3
1.5-litre TFSI evo from the EA211 platform with 150 PS and cylinder deactivation. Modern, economical four-cylinder with good durability. Particulate filter blockage possible with frequent short-trip use. Use 95 octane fuel โ inferior petrol activates knock control and increases wear.
Solid everyday engine โ does its job
204 hp 1.5L for everyday use. Be aware of known weak points.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Insufficient sealing allows moisture into the high-voltage system. Affects e-hybrid variants with EA211 base. Recalls for related hybrid vehicles documented.
Symptoms: Hybrid system warnings, reduced electric range, system faults
The 13 kWh high-voltage battery in the A3 40 TFSI e measurably loses capacity after 3 years and around 90,000 km. Battery replacement at Audi costs approx. โฌ9,000. Always test before buying used.
Symptoms: Significantly reduced electric range, faster discharge, battery capacity below 80% of new rating
The A3 8Y with TFSI e shows frequent failures in the Virtual Cockpit, MMI system, SOS unit and head-up display. Usually fixable by software updates; rarely a control unit replacement is needed.
Symptoms: Black display, fault messages in instrument cluster, SOS system fault, spontaneous system restarts
In winter, electric range is significantly reduced. Owners report messages 'Engine operation required' and restricted hybrid operation at temperatures below 0ยฐC.
Symptoms: Message 'Engine operation required', no or greatly reduced electric range, more frequent combustion engine starts
The 1.5 TFSI e also uses direct injection without port injection, so oil mist from the crankcase deposits carbon on the intake valves. Problem occurs at higher mileages.
Symptoms: Power loss, rough idle with cold engine, increased consumption
Interaction between ACT cylinder deactivation and hybrid control can cause control faults and vibrations. Audi software updates reduce the problem but do not solve it completely.
Symptoms: Juddering or shaking when switching between electric and combustion mode
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
20,500 vehicles worldwide (6,700 in Germany) were recalled. Adaptive front seat belts may provide reduced restraint force in a crash.
The passenger occupancy sensor (PODS) may erroneously deactivate the passenger airbag even when someone is sitting in the seat. Vehicles from 2020 to 2022 affected.
The plug-in hybrid battery of the 40 TFSI e costs around โฌ12,846 to replace โ a significant cost risk for older vehicles outside of warranty.
Early 8Y models (2020โ2022) suffer severe software issues: Virtual Cockpit, head-up display, SOS emergency call and multimedia system fail sporadically.
The 8Y is rated marginally behind its predecessor in build quality assessments. Early models fell to last place in reliability rankings.
