Oil scraper ring coking from short-trip use and Longlife intervals leads to elevated oil consumption from around 50,000–100,000 km. Consumption of 0.5–1 l/1,000 km possible.
Symptoms: Frequent top-up required, bluish smoke from exhaust under load, oil mist in engine bay
Carbon deposits in the turbocharger from insufficient regeneration drives, especially with predominantly short-trip use. Thermal overload possible from immediate engine shutdown after full-throttle use.
Symptoms: Power loss, whistling or rattling from turbo area, increased oil consumption
Direct injection without intake valve washing leads to carbon deposits on the intake valves. Especially pronounced with short-trip use and insufficient cleaning drives.
Symptoms: Stumbling on pull-away, rough idle, power loss, increased consumption
The Active Cylinder Technology system (2-/4-cylinder switching) produces noticeable vibrations and noises when switching, especially at moderate partial load and low rpm.
Symptoms: Perceptible juddering or vibration when switching between 2 and 4 cylinder mode, rough engine running in certain load conditions
The petrol particulate filter does not regenerate sufficiently with frequent short-trip use as the required exhaust temperature is not reached. Engine warning light and power loss follow.

20,500 vehicles worldwide (6,700 in Germany) were recalled. Adaptive front seat belts may provide reduced restraint force in a crash.
The passenger occupancy sensor (PODS) may erroneously deactivate the passenger airbag even when someone is sitting in the seat. Vehicles from 2020 to 2022 affected.
The plug-in hybrid battery of the 40 TFSI e costs around €12,846 to replace — a significant cost risk for older vehicles outside of warranty.
Early 8Y models (2020–2022) suffer severe software issues: Virtual Cockpit, head-up display, SOS emergency call and multimedia system fail sporadically.
